This happened a long time ago, and originated in India, not China. The meditative forms of Buddhism are quite empirical (once you get past some metaphysical assumptions). Ch'an/Zen in particular recognize only the authority of experience. Sounds reasonable to me.

Buddha's teaching came from India not China. The Japanese adopted the religion when it came from India, not after the Chinese adopted. Also each country worships the religion differently. Not all Buddha faith is the same. Lao, Thai, and Cambodians..do things differently then Chinese and Vietnamese people.

The Buddhism came to Japan via Korea.
Later on inspiration/knowledge about Buddhism and Enlightenment ( especially techniques about how to achieve)
was imported from China by Japanese monks ( Kuukai in 804 ( Shingon Buddhism) and Saicho in 806 (Tendai Buddhism - includes Zen)

Japan needs no help they are very big budda worshipers. They have shrines also enermous statues of budda. I think the chinese are more into communism than religions.
