You wait till you are on your own and can have one. When a cat or kitten comes into a home it deserves to be welcomed and cherished by every member of the household.

It wouldn't be fair to your father or the kitten.

two things you could do. 1. siberian cats are hypoallergenic, yes they are really fluffy but they have the lease amount of dandruft of any cat, including sphynx. However because most people don't have siberians, i would say get a kitten. We had the same issue, but we have a cat named streaker (she is now almost 6 years old). i'd known her since she was 3 days old (friends cat had kittens). when we got her from my friend we gave her a bath once a day, for almost a year (she never liked it though) because of this my dad was able to develope a tolerence to her dandruft. my cat is the only cat he can be around without an issue. And my cat is a tabby, not a siberian, so she's not hypoallergenic. Doing this your dad should be able to develope a tolerance, but maybe you could try getting another animal if you want one.

Well that's a tough one.. Having a cat allergy is miserable. It's like having a bad cold all the time.

There are three different solutions. None may be perfect however.

You could convince your dad to get cat allergy shots.

Rinsing a cat with distilled water weekly is suppose to reduce the allergen

There is Veterinary sedative that you can dilute in water and put on the cat's food that will result in it's saliva becoming non-allergenic.

Cat allergy is usually caused by the cat licking it's fur. The saliva dries then flakes off. The flaked saliva is opposite charged to most dust particles and attaches to the dust.... causing it to be inhaled...

Your father is allergic to dander not cats, if you get a kitten and give him a bath you will remove the dander , cats lick themselves to get clean and people are allergic to that saliva I'm not sure how often you should bathe them but consult with a vet or do a search on the web about dander. Good luck and I hope you can get one .

You must make a decision about what is more important to you -- your father and his ability to breathe without medication or your own need for a pet companion. Our son is deathly allergic to cats and has a severe reaction to being around them. It take a while for a house with a cat to be de-dandered enough for him to be comfortable. It's a no-brainer for me since his well-being is more important. Why not volunteer at a humane shelter or make some pocket money walking your neighbor's pets? You can have a pet pal AND look out for your father. Double bonus!

What you do is wait until you're old enough to be out on your own. Then, if you can afford to properly care for a kitty, by all means get one. But, your dad cannot control the fact that he is allergic to cats---many, many people are--this is not unusual.

Try a ferret. They are like cats, they schedule they sleep time when you are not home and they are fun. If not a ferret, a rabbit or guinea pig. Do all your research before hand. If you really wanna give it a shot, a dog not a puppy.

there are genetically enhanced cats that don't make people as allergic, but they are very expensive. there are Also hairless cats- no dander. if none of those options appeal to you, maybe you should wait until you older and live alone to get a cat!
