It is usually 2 years of school plus extern/internship. Pay goes by area, vet clinic, etc and is usually varies from $8.25 to $18 per hour.(some places may be more).
Periodically you will need to take refresher courses and also keep updated on new veterinary medical advances/technology.

No college required for vet tech position.The vet usually trains you and pays for classes.My mom works in Kansas City and makes around 9 dollars an hour.Pay varies depending on location.City pays better than country ,etc.

Or a vet assistant?

I can't tell you it depends on each individual clinic. Some pay good and some not so good.
