. Yes 95% of the 2400 ps2 games play on the ps3 .. if you live in the U.S. get the 60 gig at $499... If you like guitar hero , you are gonna love Rock band, It not only has the wireless guitar it also has the Drum set and Microphone....the makers of Rockband will be colaborating with guitar hero so you will be able to use the wireless guitar from rockband with the guitar hero series on the ps3. you'll love it.
PS3 is a whole family gift, it plays blueray movies, it has it's own internet browser for the family to surf the net together with , For a long term investment spend the extra $20 on the ps3 ..
THe xbox 360 - elite will cost $479 but you still have to buy a quick charger $20, hddvd $200, and Wifi $100... The xbox 360, elite and 65nm also are locked into dx 9 graphics which cannot be upgraded, Programmers are now using dx 10 graphics, so the 360, elite and 360 65nm are already outdated....
The xbox has many many hardware issues and your kids may get very frustrated with it ..Xbox live has alot of foul mouthed 11 year olds... etc....

Most PS2 games will work on the PS3, and guitar hero 2 is listed on the Sony site as working. Not sure about the controller, but there is an adapter you can get for the standard dualshock so i presume (though don't quote me on it) that this'll work.
The new guitar hero game is due next month and for the PS3 at least (not totally sure about the 360) will have a wireless guitar controller.
It's also probably worth mentioning if you don't know, that the development team behind the original games got bought by EA and are making Rock band, which may also be worth a look!

i would get the ps3 for MANY MANY reasons
i'll list some of the reasons
- ps3 has a built-in blu-ray player
- ps3 has much more and better exclusives, most of them cant go to xbox 360 because it cant handle that many data(HD DVD- 8.5gb, blu-ray 25gb)
- online is free for ps3 not like 360
- ps3 will have over 300 games released by this spring
- when developers get used to the system, the graphics will be WAY better than 360. should take them a year to get used to it
- playstation home is coming out this spring, its a virtual community where you can hang out with friends and customize your own apartment which xbox doesnt have
- ps3 is a true HD console. xbox 360 upscale games to 1080p and ps3 DISPLAY games up to 1080p
- built in Wi-Fi
- xbox 360: 33% hardware failure
ps3: 3% hardware failure
those are the ones that i know right off my mind but there are much more reason than this
Prices as of today:
ps3- 80gb: $599
60gb: $499
xbox 360- $399 (if you want the accessories that ps3 comes with, that would add up to over 700 dollars)
Prices for the holidays(rumors)
ps3- 80gb: $499
40gb: $399
didnt hear anything about 360 but it probably will stay at $399

Almost a third of XBOX 360 are malfunctioning right from the start. PS3 return rate is only 0.3%.
Let's compare them
PS3 has 8 kernels in Cell processor, Xbox 360 -only 3x2
PS3 uses advanced tech called Blu-Ray, one disc can store up to 50 gb (in the future - up to 200 gb), Xbox 360 - regular DVD (4.7 gb).
Calculations per sec - PS3 - 51-billion-dot-product-operati... per second
Xbox 360 - 33.6-billion-dot-product-opera... per second
PS3 has full media support - USBs, built-in card reader (except 20 gb version), ability to use printer and so on.
Xbox 360 has USBs and only 2 memory slots.
PS3 supports up to 7 Bluetooth Controllers
Xbox 360 - up to 4 Controllers
PS3 - wi-fi included (except 20 gb version)
Xbox 360 - wi-fi will cost you around 130 $
Xbox 360 is widely known for so-called "red ring of doom" problem - it gets overheated easily. My PS3 was running for more than 8 hours non-stop with no problems. Sometimes Xbox 360 becomes so overheated, that thermopaste on CPU melts, drips on motherboard and successfully shortcircuits it.
Besides all of this, I've seen disassembled Xbox 360 - regular PC architecture - Billy Gates is a uninventive nerd (as usual).
When I saw disassembled PS3 - it was a surprise - smart architecture, good cooling (don't buy external PS3 coolers - they make everything worse - original system is good), etc.
In 2008 we'll get more than 300 games.
In some countries people call Xbox 360 "Coffin 360".
