My son will be 4 in January. I'm still having trouble getting him interrested in the toilet!!! He knows what "pee-pee"and "poo-poo" are and seems digusted when he sees them in his pull-ups or underwear. I'll sit him on his potty several times during the day for 30 minutes to an hour each day, but he WILL NOT try to go in it. The minute I let him get off his potty and put a pull-up or underwear on him, he GOES!! He won't even tell me when he needs to go. HELP PLEASE!!!

The first thing I would do is stop putting pull-ups on him. Make him wear big boy underwear. When he potties in his pants, make him help you clean it up so he'll know how nasty it is. Don't make him sit on the toilet for that long, he'll get disinterested and it'll make it worse. Ask him several times a day if he has to go, but don't make him go if he says no. But like I said, if he does it in his big boy pants, make him help. Let him go to the potty with dad, or with a bigger brother. Put cheerios in the toilet and ask him to see if he can hit them with his pee-pee. (This helped my son with peeing in the toilet like a big boy, he got a kick out of trying to hit them.)

And do not punish him for mistakes. He'll get it.

First-- Relax! It sounds like he is just trying to control the situation, and gues what... he can!

I do agreee that you need to take him out of the pull-ups except at night or naps.

I put a few drops of food coloring in the toliet and my son would try to turn the potty a different color.

Also, don't sit in there with him for a half in hour. Put him on the potty and give his some privacy. Or clean the bathroom- he may be enjoying your company too much to do anything on it!

Also, we used cheerios for target practice. It was also a big deal when he went- candy, dancing and singing.

Make it fun and stop fighting him with it! Best wishes!

Does he like Elmo? I just got a potty-training Elmo off of craigslist because I could not find them in the store. When I took my son to his playgroup they had one in the bathroom and when he saw Elmo using his "Potty chair" he peed in the toilet. I just got my Elmo today so I will see if it works again. Also, if he likes Thomas, the Dollar Tree has Thomas posters and stickers that I also got for my son and am planning on using that in the bathroom too. Using pull-ups in public is OK, but I bought a folding potty seat that folds flat and fits in the diaper bag and goes over a regular toilet seat. Also cuts back on any bacteria. I just wipe it clean with clorox wipes that are in a foil pouch that I keep in the bag also.

One of the children I used to nanny for had the same problem. I asked my mom how she potty trained my brothers and she said hse would have a bowl of fruit loops next to the toilet and make it a game. She would allow them to have a handful of fruit loops and throw it in the toilet then they would have to try to sink it down. She said she would buy pretty toilet paper that was colored so that they would want to use the bathroom. Try decorating the bathroom with spongebob or your childs favorite cartoon character and say that they come here to use the bathroom. Try to encourage him to use the bathroom like spongebob does. Good Luck. If this does'nt work ocnsult a doctor she/he would have something that will work.

Oh dear. He is quite old for this- have you spoken with your doctor to confirm there is no underlying issues like learning disabilities or bladder infection?

My suggest is as follows: Use a rewards chart. Set a kitchen timer to go off every hour. For each hour he goes without an accident he gets a star on the chart. For each column filled with stars he gets a prize (something small like stickers or stamps- don't use food). Do not use negative reinforcement (no punishments).

If he cannot tell when he has to go to the bathroom then there is likely something causing this issue.

Ok this is advice I gave my neighbor and it worked for going pee. Teach him to pee outside first he will get a kick out of it and will start going outside then after about 3 days of this have him go pee in the potty he may just be scared of it their are many reasons why children won't go potty on the tolit you just have to figure out what it is. Let me know if peeing out side works for him.
