Connect the player directly to the TV, do you get audio?
If yes, Then you haven't configured your surround system correctly. If no, make sure you selected the proper input on your TV.

By the way, since you have surround , use the digital audio output from your DVD player to get all 5.1 audio channels.

I would return it if you have the exact same cables. Must be a bad unit. Return it for the same thing if you want. I would return it and buy an HD-DVD player they make your DVD's look better and the prices on the movies has gone down to the same as DVD and there is a night and day difference. I would liken it to the difference in VHS and DVD.
