Hello July28usa,
It is so sad when cats are stray, the kindest thing to do is take it to a shelter that won't euthanize it, but that will take care of it until it is re-homed. Then the cat will find a family of his own and you won't have him roaming round your neighbourhood.
Hope this helped,
Feel free to email me,
regards, =^..^=

Personally, I'm not crazy about the wording, "get rid of it." I'm afraid that has lots of meanings, from getting it a home, to rubbing it out or dumping it. Do you have an animal control where you are, or humane society? That is the place for it. That animal has feelings and needs, food, water, shelter, and most of all, love. Lacking an animal control, try calling the police if you live in town, or a sherif if not, (good luck) or try placing an ad in the paper. It will no doubt join a zillion other ads with unwanted pets. Spay and Neuter, folks, that prevents this. I'm wondering if it has a source of water or food.

Why would you take a cat that you don't want? :(
Anyway, take it to a pound. Or ask your friends if they want it. Take pictures of it and ask vets to allow you to put the 'ad' in their cabinet.
Someone will take it. Just be patient. 'Getting rid of it' is not the idea. If you bothered to save it, at least do a good job of giving it a good home somewhere, until the situation is solved. You will feel better, trust me. A living soul is a living soul, regardless of its external shape.

1st, DO NOT listen to the people who suggest hurting or abandoning the cat.
2nd, call the non-emergency police number and ask for an animal control officer. They may take the cat for you. If that doesn't work, contact a vet who may take it or a shelter. Not all of them charge a surrender fee.
Please do the right thing.

Post flyers in your neighbor hood. Send emails to your community. and say your giving away a cat. Go around ask your neighbors. DO NOT SEND IT TO THE POUND. Theres like a 70% chance that she/he will be distroyed.
and actually you guys NO kill shelters are just SLOW kill shelters!

First.....make sure she's really a stray. Could be someone's pet, that got outdoors. Contact your local no-kill shelter (put some effort into it, just because you don't want this cat, doesn't mean it should be dropped off at the nearest pound).

Bring the poor thing to a shelter or a nearby rescue group that does not euthanize.

Isn't there a shelter where you live?
Poor kitty. Sometimes kitties show up when you need them.
Maybe you're supposed to learn 'compassion' from her.
Those who will teach us a life-lesson come in all forms.

Take it to the nearest Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals; they should take good care of it!
