I think it was very rude for the person to do a hit and run. Did you get the license plate number? If you did you could report them to the police. Especially since they sped up and drove away. I know how it is sometimes to try to switch leashes and the dog to get away before the other leash gets hooked on the collar. It has happened to me. I now have invisible fencing to keep my dog in the yard. It really works, because he will not even attempt to get out even without the collar on.

While it might not be the most considerate thing to do I don't think it was rude. I was not there fault they hit the dog. The dog should not have been in the road. I understand dogs get loose and accidents happen that doesn't make it there fault and as far as I am concerned they don't have to stop. In our area you could get beat up by a irate dog owner if you stopped so I don't stop unless I know the people. In this day and time you don't know how people are going to react people have been killed for less. Also there is not much the driver could do for the dog and I haven't a clue how they could be charged with animal cruelty for hitting a dog that ran in front of them. That would not happen in our area.

I don't think you quite have the definition of rude correct. This was not rude behavior, this was inconsiderate, unconscionable, cruel, heartless, despicable...... Far beyond rude. Rude would have been nearly hitting your dog and yelling at you with profanity for not having your dog on a leash.
Which brings up another subject, how did your dog get into the road? How did it get out without a leash and a person holding that leash?
I am sorry that your dog came to this kind of an end. Dogs never win a collision between them and a car.

Well of course it is rude, beyond rude. But what you have to remember is that most people are cowards and too scared to confront anything uncomfortable.
I hit a duck once and it took me 5 minutes to get the guts to out of the car and make sure it was dead. I was afraid of what I'd see and what it meant if it wasn't dead.
These situations are hard so just because the person did that doesn't necessarily mean they are heartless, it COULD be that they are heartless, but it could also mean that they were just a coward. People are too used to not dealing with messes that they make, even if by accident.
And I agree with DP. The dog should not have been in the road to begin with. That part is your fault.

Sorry, losing your dog that way must be awful. Rude ... how about insensitive, ignorant pigs? And, what's with the posters who are chastising her for not training her dog and calling her rude? Things happen, dogs get loose, the kids next door opened my gate and my dogs got out. Do you think I was rude and my punishment should be my dogs are hit by a car?Again, so sorry about your dog.

Yeah I do.
When I was litle my parents bred Siberian Huskies. Then around Thanksgiving when I was 5 he dug a hole out under our fence and got out. He was hit by a car, the driver didn't stop. Luckily a lady stopped and got him and tried to take care of him, but he had been hit so hard his back legs and pelvis were shattered. He ended up dying too.
People can be really awful.

you may think that it was rude but a dog after being hit,may bite anyone that gets close when injured.years ago a dog was hit outside a pizza hut where my wife was.when she and others went out to see about it,she swung around to call for help and it ran and bit down on her hand.now she knows better and i do too.

Absolutely!! However...just pray that the driver doesn't come back, to try to file a claim against you. Believe it or not, people have actually killed pets and sued the owners for car damage.
BTW, I'm very sorry for you dog and your loss.

I am sorry for your lose, but i think you are both irresponsible. The driver for leaving the scene of the accident and you for allowing the dog to run free in the street.

Not only rude but in California it's a misdemeanor.
You can check your own state at the link below. Dogs are considered property.
**EDIT**
Hey...my dogs are my kids as I am unable to have any of my own. I suppose I should have clarified that the LAW considers dogs property.
