the body may be a temple, but even the most austere shrines have some decoration. there are few churches more beautifully adorned than a catholic church, with its stained glass windows, yet no one thinks it is wrong to do that. why is the body different?

edit: what i asked was why "so many people" have issues, not why "the majority" do. as it stands right now, 10% of the answerers to this q have an issue - that's not exactly nobody if it is to be seen as a fair representation of society at large. there are many people who (for various reasons) are against tattoos, and whether or not you believe they exist does not change the fact that they do. it simply means you have been lucky enough to have not been affected by them.

as for there being a direct link between tattoos & intelligence...well, i can't say i believe that, but to each their own. i learned a long time ago to avoid a battle of wits with an unarmed opponent so i'll leave that one alone.

I believe that attitudes have changed regarding tattos. A well placed tattoo can be a beautiful asset.

I was over 50 when I got mine. It was a tribute to one of my best friends who had recently passed away with cancer. Every time I look at it I have fond memories of her and times we spent together.

What is on the inside of a person has always mattered more to me than what is visible on the outside.

I think the media has a role in this question. When you watch movies, the "gangsta" always is covered in tattoos. People have come to associate tattoos with rebellion and crime.
I think another huge issue is that generations have differences in opinion. The older societies, grew up very conservative. Their concerns were surviving during the great depression, the era was very conservative due to life circumstances. The next generation was very mixed, the depression generation had children who grew up conservative as well. You know the whole meet the bevers, brady bunch thing. You also had hippes. It seems like our generation is much more liberal than the pervious ones. We love tattoos and freedom.

I personally love my tattoos and i work as a CPA... lol most people wouldnt expect an accountant to have a tattoo and peircing obsession :)

I personally don't believe tattoos are necessarily a bad thing, but also i am not religious and do not believe the body is a temple. I think tattoos can become a bad thing when they are done on whims or people choose something that doesn't mean anything to them. The key to getting a tattoo is remember the real meaning of forever.

It's throwback to the cultural suspicion of differently adorned tribes..Tats are viewed by some, (mostly older people) as a sign of marking yourself as "blood brother" (or Sista') to a scary looking bunch of folk...like bikers, carnies and scurvy sailors, some of which have questionable morals and engage in bizarre behavior (in these people's eyes) and punk goth people too...shows like Miami Ink and so forth don't help much either....to some people scratching and puncturing your skin voluntarily seems distasteful.
Plus it can turn off some employers.
I personally don't give a hoot anymore what young'uns do.
Have your fun.

I found a quote once that said "My body is my temple, I'm just painting the walls."

You are absolutely correct, churches are supposed to be temple like structures, but yet even they are allowed to re-decorate the place to their liking aren't they? Whats' the difference in people re-decorating their bodies to what they think looks beautiful?

Some people just have different opinions of what should be done and what should not be done to ones' body. But don't let it ever deter you from what you want to do with your life. It's your body, not theirs. So you should be able to "paint" your walls however you'd like to.

I'm not sure that your premise is correct. That is that 'so many people have issues with tattoos'. I just don't see that. It used to be the case, maybe, but I don't think it is any longer. So, I would argue that most people do not have issues with tattoos.

because some people believe that only evil people weat tattoos and that it symboliyzes evil, but in real life, it doesn't have to be that bad. almost everyone has a tat. now a days.

Not bothering to get to know someone because they have a tattoo, makes you dumb.

Because people are living in the olden days when only "gangsters" and "bad" people had them.

I don't think it's "wrong" to have them. But people who have tattoos tend to be dumber than people who don't have tattoos. And I don't like dumb people. So I tend not to bother getting to know people who have tattoos, since I don't want to waste my time getting to know people who I probably would end up not liking anyway.

(You can substitute the word "cool" for the word "dumb" if it makes you feel better about yourself.)
