My mom just finished doing the treadmill for an hour and a half and she walked seven miles. When she got off the treadmill, when she was rubbing her skin, there was salt all over her skin. She even showed it to me. It was white little small grands of salt. It was all over her arms and legs. What does this sound like?

I don't want to alarm you, but this could be a sign of something more serious. I am a nurse, so I'm not pulling this out of my behind. In kidney failure, the kidneys cannot excrete urea properly. (urea is a component of urine). It can crystallize in sweat on the skin. It will usually make the skin itchy. Your mom needs to ask herself some questions: Does she have fatigue? Urinate frequently? Bruise easily? Have swollen feet or legs? Have high blood pressure? Early kidney failure will produce mild and few symptoms. This may be a freak thing due to her profuse sweating although I personally have never heard of that happening to anyone. Or it may be a warning sign from her body. It bears a discussion with her physician this week.

It sounds like it was salt, from sweating. She should drink some Gatorade or other sports drink to replenish fluid and electrolytes.

I think she was sweating. That means she should walk like that more often and drink sports drinks like gatorade and powerade and lots of water. Tell her to eat pretzels or crackers after she runs too. This will help stop her from sweating like that.

Still I TOTALLY agree with MS that your Mom should have an apointment with her M.D.

it was her sweat crytalizing the salts out of it, she was probably hot, and then it dried on here skin. give her some gatorade.
