Does it look bad on an application if I check do not contact current employer?

I do not want my current employer to know that I am looking for jobs. I also do not think that they would give the best reference for me, the job is not a good fit for me. I am looking for employment in a totally different line of work, my current job is working with young children with special needs, I am applying for jobs in retail.

No, doesn't look bad, it's pretty common not to want your current employer contacted so they would know you are job-hunting.

no, most employers will understand that if they don't offer you a position, your current employer may not take the news that you are looking for a new job

always but your current employer on your applications, it looks bad to have a long period with no job. they look to figure out why you had no job, what was wrong with you.

they wouldn't give the option to tick that box if they were going to use it against you, that means it's biased which is a form of discrimination. like the other person said, they put it there so that if you are looking for a job and they like your application, there's no pressure to contact your current boss, but i think ticking that box means that they contact your employer AFTER you've gotten a job at the new place. not that they don't contact them at all, because they will want a reference.

I don't think it looks bad because they probably realize most people don't want their current employer to know they are looking for work.
