If someone has to take medical leave for injuries obtained outside of work? Someone I know has to have surgery, but he's the only one in the household who's earning wages. If he takes a leave of absence, he'll be broke in a hurry; I'm wondering if there's any way to offset this.

He can apply for short-term disability with his current employer...that covers short-term income issues for up to 90 days before long-term disability kicks in.

Unemployment cannot be paid to your friend as long as they are on a leave of absence.

If he has disability insurance, that might pay him something while he's off.

You can only collect unemployment if you are able to work and are available for work, so if he's off on medical leave, no he couldn't collect unemployment.
