I suggest you go with the Smith & Wesson Model 640, in 357 Magnum caliber..It's like having "two guns" in one... with the ability to shoot "HOT"+P 38 Special loads or 357 Magnums. By going this route you have many additional loads you can choose from for just about any application..Home defense..personal protection etc.Either configuration will do fine...Unless you intend to fire you gun from "inside" your pockets or clothes..

SMITH & WESSON..When only the BEST will do !!!!

In a 2" barrel revolver, the .357 is a waste of money, and all you get is horrendous recoil. You cannot get true .357 velocities unless you fire it from at least a 4" barreled gun.I would opt for the model 642, and use standard velocity ammo in it, for the same reason.+P .38 spl rounds will wear that J frame down quickly, although it says it can take +P.

Why do you want it. For fun 640. For social use the 642, I love it I just bought one, dissapears in a front pocket, but I don't carry it as a primary weapon, it's a backup to my glock 19. I don't endevour to get into a gunfight especially with a pistol and a five shot revolver to be exact.

.357 mag. is to powerful of a caliber for self defense due to the high velocity. That means it could not only go through your assilent but will also endanger other possible by standers. that is if your asking for self defense purpose. For hunting purpose i would choose the .357,because you need the velocity and you also can always use the .38 special in the .357 mag revolver.

Get the 640, more ammo options.

The real question is which hammer configuration will you get? Cheif's Special, the Centennial or the Bodyguard?

It depends on what you want it for.

If you shoot .38 in your .357, the shorter case will allow erosion of the cylinder at a point that may cause .357 brass to get stuck after expanding into the rough texture.

(For practice, you can get .357 brass loaded with .38 spl target load powder, as long as there is adequate case fill)
