Actually George Washington, Tomas Jefferson and many others were atheist and although they felt you had the right to be what ever you want to call yourself you should make dictions for all people not just in the favor of like minded people.

The reason some of the founding fathers called themselves deists was because atheists were reviled (not much change there, then!). Many were de facto atheists.

The documents were based on universal values: ones that have been continually highjacked by religions as their own.

Just because there are those who say religion has no place in government, doesn't make it true. Praise God for that! While you mock the President's faith, why is it that after the Democrates saw that 90+% of the American people believed in God, they all started talking about their faith in God and how they go to church all the time! Are they crazy? Was Bill Clinton crazy when he walked around carrying his Bible (even when he was committing adultery) on Easter morning? Was Bill Clinton crazy when he dropped bombs - is killing a 'few' ok? You better hope there is a President that knows there is 'somebody' bigger than him or her.

This is how far we've fallen from the original intent of the Constitution. Whether they were religious or not, they didn't want anybody leading the country who would rationalize his decisions by saying,"God told me...". Obviously, they had observed a lot of knuckle-heads using that as an excuse for various acts of stupidity.
I noticed how a lot people jumped you professing that Washington and others believed in God and prayed and such. Maybe so. But they NEVER used it as a political tool or means of rationalizing their ideas.
P.S. Benjamin Franklin was an avowed atheist and certainly had a tremendous influence on the formation of this country.

Because the president is not "the government." He is a part of the government. One of the specific reasons the constitution called for separation of church and state is so people who wanted government jobs couldn't be required to take a religion test. The founding fathers wanted people to be able to work for the government regardless of their belief of lack thereof. To ask the president to put aside his beliefs would be completely contrary to the constitution.

The rest of your question is based on the assumption that Dubya is correct in his claims. Just because he says he talks to God doesn't mean he actually is, and just because he's talking to God doesn't mean God must be approving of Dubya's behavior.

Because over 70% of Americans still believe in a god and want a president who also believes in god. Also those same people would not care if America became a Theocracy

Well the answer to this is that religion has always been a part of our government whether we like it or not. Every since president we have had has been a christian as well as our founding fathers who wrote the articles of confederation, the declaration of independence, and the US constitution we christian. Those first documents were actually writen based on christian values and morals.

Good Lord! The sweep and breadth of your ignorance is truly astonishing!!!

George Washington was an 'atheist'? It is clear you have never read Mr. Washington's private prayer journals!

If you wish to learn something, and not make such a complete dunce of yourself publicly, may I suggest you pick up Washington Irving's LIFE OF GEORGE WASHINGTON?

Neither was Jefferson an atheist. He was very deistic in his thought, but certainly not an atheist. You would be hard pressed indeed to find among our Founders even one who was a professing atheist.

You are wrong and I wish your would give me your facts about George and Thomas They were both Masons and it just goes to show you how much you know... You have to believe in God to become a Mason. Lots of people talk to God.. I have known lots of people who talk to God... I think your uncle was talking and then listening to the questions... Thats the reason he is in the looney bin.. George Bush talks to God like most of us Christians and do not hear him talk back. But Athiest like you want to make us all look bad... I dont like George Bush either. But I respect his office and his position.. Its people like you that protest all things that the majority of US citizens want.. You need help...

All non secular human beings are loopy! they suspect in all sorts of made up stuff. regrettably, they're 80% of human beings(of all political varieties). it may well be high-quality if only Rational human beings have been given into public workplaces.....however the loopy non secular human beings have too plenty potential. i may well be great to have somebody run for President who might say 'faith is in basic terms some made up stuff that some human beings have faith, yet they're loose to belive besides the fact that they like, and that i don't care'.
