I saw Purina puppy chows in Big Lots the other day, for those you don't know, it's a store that buys left over goods from another store.
It's very cheap but I'm scare to buy it, because I'm afraid it's one of those recall dog food from China. Was Purina one of those brands that was recalled? Anyone remembers?

I'm not going to enter the good food/bad food pet debate. It's up to you to decide what you want to feed your dog. Do some research and see what you think. I think you feed your dog the very best dog food you can afford.

With that said, I would completely avoid purchasing ANY food from Big Lots and those Dollar stores. That stuff is old, discountinued and who knows what else is wrong with it.

Please purchase your dog's food from a good quality pet store. They will make sure the food is fresh.

Now, if you hang out on YA long enough, you'll read many questions and answers about good quality dog foods. There are tons out there. It's just up to you to decide which one to feed your dog.

PS... I'm not a dog chow fan.

I don't think Purina was on the recall lists, at least not the bagged dry food. However, Purina makes a variety of foods, some better than others. The only Purina I would buy is Pro Plan or perhaps Purina One.
There should be an expiration or some kind of date somewhere on the bag. Look for that. Dry food will last quite a while but not forever. In any dog food, read the ingredient list. The first ingredients should be an animal source protein, such as chicken, turkey or lamb. Personally, I would avoid beef based dog foods. Avoid any with a lot of wheat or corn in them. Rice is a better carborhydrate source for dogs, wheat, corn and soy are not good sources.

I'm sure the food is safe, however, not nutritious for your puppy. The first ingredient of your puppy's food should be some kind of meat (and not meat by-product). By-products are the leftover crap from the butchering process that is not the actual meat. It would be like eating hot dogs or spam every day. If the first ingredient is corn, wheat, or rice, then it won't be nutritous for you puppy. Dogs/pups need meat as the first ingredient. Since most grocery stores do not carry these types of dog foods, I go to PetSmart or Petco to pick up nutritious dog food. Don't forget to get dog food that is specifically designed for puppy (it will say puppy on the bag). Just like babies and toddlers, puppies have different nutritional needs than full grown dogs. Nutro is an inexpensive/nutritious brand for your puppy. They have a small bites formula if you have a smaller dog that would prefer smaller pieces. When in doubt, ask your puppy's vet which dog food would be best for him/her.

FYI - places like Petsmart and Petco keep up to date on which pet foods are placed on the recall list and pull anything from their shelves that is unsafe for your pets.

Good luck!

I use either IAMS or the Purina One. Honestly Hemei I dont like anything from biglots, It seems everything I have ever bought there was really poor quality. I wouldnt feel good to tell you saving money from there is good idea. If I reacll you pay 2000 on the dog , so at least avoid biglots. I think biglots also have alot of reject products that didnt quite pass the inspections and is a second. I recenly bought an outdoor umbrella there that was so cute and nice, until a small wind broke all the wood supports. I decided that was the last time I trust them, and I would feel so sad if your dog suffer. How can you know, and how u will feel if there was some problem. It will be too late, please dont chance this ok ??? IAMS is my first choice and after she is finished with the purina one I wll go back to IAMS for good. I feel Puria One is good quality but I want her the best coz I love her and want her with me as long as possible.

Innova is one of the top foods you can feed him. He may just be stressed so don't give up on the food brand. Try adding a lil warm water and letting it sit for 10 minutes or try mixing it with a "chopped" canned food. A food I reccommend for picky eaters is Bil Jac and can be bought at Petsmart and Petco. I also use Nutro Ultra or Natural Choice. This is how I feel on buying dog food IF THERE ARE COMMERCIAL ADVERTISEMENTS AND/OR YOU CAN GET IT AT YOUR LOCAL GROCERY STORE, IT IS NOT A GOOD FOOD. So far this has been 100% true. Look at any dry dog food in your grocery store and I bet corn is one of the ingredients. Have fun with your new baby.

Pet food you can buy at the grocery store, Big Lots, or department stores (Target, Wal-mart) is not the best quality. You're actually going to find the best quality kibble at either feed stores or pet specality stores (which is not pet shops). If you go to websites for Solid Gold, Timberwolf Organics, Canidae, or some of the others that are highly recommended (check out that website a previous poster put up that rates the dog food) you can check where they have distributors local to you.

I use Hill's Science Diet, but my vet told me that Purina was another safe choice. The last time I spoke to my vet about the pet food recalls, Purina still had a good name, but he definitely recommends Hill's Science diet.
Thanks for asking, because your question reminds me that I need to pick up some kibble today.

Well, I don't really know, but I don't think you should buy it. This is something for a living dog. You should go to a pet store and just buy it there. You can ask the workers at the store, they will know what the recalled pet foods are.

I wouldn't buy any brand in that type of store. The reason it's so cheap is because it's very close to the best before date, or it's an overstock from another store. I would stick to a reputable pet food store. You ask 10 people what type of food they feed, and you'll get 10 different answers. The best way is for you to ask your vet, and get his/her recommendation.

It is probably not a recall, but Purina is infamous for using ground yellow corn as a base filler in their foods. All this does is pass through your dog. They have bigger poops, smellier gas and can develop corn allergies. You also have to feed more than you would if you fed a better diet.
If you look at the first 3 ingredients on a bag of kibble each one reresents roughly 1/3rd of the bag. So if your first three ingredients are corn and grains then your dog is not getting very much meat.
Personally I recommend a BARF type Diet. I had to modify mine in so that they get a little kibble and mostly meats and bones. They are doing Awesome!!!
