Until you've actually been allowed to enter the US, the Customs and Border inspector can pretty much ask and do whatever he thinks is necessary. If he thinks you do look like you might be able to afford a 90 stay, he can certainly ask you to tell him how you intend to support yourself here and can ask you to open your wallet if he wants. He can also ask you to open your bags and show him what's inside. And, if he doesn't like what he sees when you show him your wallet and bags, he has the authority to refuse you to enter, unless it's something he really doesn't like and then he can bar you from entering again in the future. That's pretty much true for immigration in any country.

The law is that you have to be able to support yourself without working on a visitor's visa. It sounds like you intend on lying on the paperwork. That IS grounds for deportation.

Just tell the truth. If there is a discrepancy, tell the truth. If you are staying with friends, you need less money. People understand that.

You have to declare the cash you are bringing into the country. Almost all countries do this for several reasons.
There are controls as to the maximum you can bring in. They also want to know that you have enough to live on so you don't get on the government dole. For example Australia requires at least $5000 to get a 6 months visa.

Yes. My husband and I once went to Hungary with a one way ticket because we were going to take care of his 80 year old mom for awhile and we weren't sure how long we would stay there. At the airport in Las Vegas, Nv. I had to show that I had money to go and to buy a return ticket. We had $10,000 cash with us all you can carry with you.I felt weird flashing all of that cash for everyone to see. They are so rude at the airport that I really have a whole list of horror stories about how we are treated nowdays.I have to meditate days before I fly, not because I am afraid to fly, I am afraid of the hassles from airport employees.
