Would would be the consequences of such a policy? I have my own opinions, but I wanted to read other peoples unfettered opinions of what they think will happen. Serious answers only please.

45 cal, we have thousands everyday entering this country, some legal, some illegal...Our Nations leaders have not done much to stop the flow, so are we really not that close to having an open border policy as it sits today?

Thomas M, I partially agree with one thing you mentioned, that we should probably have less restrictions on Legal immigration. I think that would help ease the flow somewhat of Illegals, by how much is anyones guess.

All hell would break loose.
I think even the current illegals and pro-illegals would be upset.
There we be an influx of uneducated people taking all the jobs requiring manual labor and few skills. The ghetto neighboorhoods would expand. Student- teacher rates would become worse than they are now. The requirement for any freebies would have to become more strict and require a lot more verification. There would be more animosity towards illegals and new imigrants. Apartments and cheap housing would become more expensive. Depending on where the new immigrants move, property values would fall.

I read on hear people saying lower pay, less jobs, anarchy. HELLO! I don't know where these people live but, all of these events are happening now. I personally can't wait to graduate college so I can leave this God-less country. There are no morals, greed is rampant. Rome all over again. I am 37 and have witnessed this country go to hell in a hand basket. All that I have said is true whether a person wishes to believe it or not!

I agree with Ausacia. Goths were allowed into the ROman empire as refuge from the Huns. Suddenly there were more people the land can provide, and the Goths revolted and a large part of the ROman Army was destroyed. The ROman EMpire never recovered.
As what would happen. THere would be over 100 million that would enter US. There are 150 million Chinese suffering malnutrition. 200 million Indians suffereing malnutrition. Africa has a slew of problems. It's not just about the 6 million Mexicans bringing their friends. There are BILLIONS of people who are worse of then the Mexicans. We can't save them all from pverty.

Completely open borders would be a mistake - it would open things up for gangs and terrorists to move in.
I think quota-free immigration subject to background checks would actually, though, not lead to much difference from what we have now, except that it would dramatically improve America's reputation in the developing world. A Cato Institute study found that since 1986, when the last amnesty was passed and border security was increased, two major changes have resulted: the cost of the border patrol has gone way up and the typical length of a visit for an illegal immigrant has gotten much longer. With an open border, I honestly think Mexicans who came to America would have shorter stays. An awful lot of them just want to save up maybe $5000-$10000 then go back to Mexico and buy a house or start a business. If they know that they can come back again later, then they leave when they have what they think they want. If they know it will be hard to come back again, then they stay until they're sure they have all they'll ever need. Italian immigrants 100 years ago did this save up money and return to Italy business, and you can actually see it in the South of Italy still - many villages were essentially rebuilt in the early 1900's by the "ritornati." We would have more immigrants in America with open borders, but I don't think there would be all that many more. Not much else would change, except that since all these immigrants would be legal and registered, they'd all be paying taxes, and they would be able to have driver's licenses and auto insurance, etc.

Kiss your money good bye. Wages would be driven down, crime goes up along with disease that were pretty much gone in the u.s. due to the poor health care system in mexico.
The whole purpose of immigration is knowing who is coming into the country. Are they healthy? Will they contribute to society or be a burden? Are they criminals/predators. It's not about being mean and keeping someone out. It's about knowing who is coming in. This is why the process takes time. Do you really want your children sitting in a class with a child with untreated Hep B or TB?

We have 2 sets of immigration practices. One group prefers to do things the right way and get processed legally. This group often has marketable job skills.
The other group says "the hell with that" and discovers great success in risking their life to benefit financially from having no skills to offer.
If the borders were no longer protected, Americans would experience a similar situation they are now. There IS NO Homeland Security, Millions of undocumented aliens in their midst and the Word CITIZEN would become meaningless much sooner than it already is.
In other words, the killing of America would be escelated.

Mass immigration is one of the causes given for the fall of the Roman Empire. Just a thought, pay no attention to it.
They didn't pay attention to it either.
Unlike previous empires that basically moved whole peoples to different areas to destroy their nationalism, other then Cyrus the Persian, the conquered where just taxed, fifty years before the "fall" the Emperor of Rome allowed the Germans to immigrate into Romes territory, and the rest is history.

The population of the United States would be one billion in a week.
Two billion might take a little longer due to inner tube shortage.
So many people would come here that other countries would STOP their people from coming here.
Their countries would soon be empty if they did not.

Our economy would be destroyed. Demands on social services would skyrocket and wages would plummet. National health care (required now that anyone can walk in) would cripple our over taxed health care system. National security would be more of a joke than it is now. Huge crime waves would destroy whole cities, maybe even whole states.
This would be a VERY bad idea.
