I would disagree with the first two posters. Being a coach I can say that the most important thing about sprinting is efficiency. If you say you are already fast, increasing your bulk muscle mass does not necessarily mean you will get faster. In fact if you bulk muscles that are not used entirely for sprinting, then the added muscle weight is just a long for the ride and is then a burden.

If you want to get faster work on drills to refine your technique and sprinting form. Learning how to run relaxed and to use the least amount of energy possible is the best way to reach that next level once you are already fast.

All the development you really need in terms of sprinting you gain from your track training and the time spent in the weight room (although you don't load in the weight room I hope). Adding strength to your arms and core is very important since your arms are like pistons at the end of a 400m and can keep driving your legs forward when they are tightening up from the lactic acid.

I say focus on doing proper form drills/sprint drills and make yourself more efficient before you go and try adding excess bulk, which will most likely have a moderate or possibly negative impact on your performance.

Big Leg Muscles

If you watch the Olympics, you'll see 2 kinds of runners with big leg muscles: 100 and 200 meter dash. Everyone else is a string bean.

When I was running 40-50 miles per week, my calves had nice definition when flexed but looked fairly normal otherwise; I never had bulging muscles. Big muscles are for raw strength, which is not required for running. The limiting factor for speed is anatomy, not strength. For example, you cannot outrun a cat despite being at least ten times stronger than it.

Form, timing and aerobic fitness far outweigh strength for running speed. Go to a 10k race sometime and check out the first fifty people across the line, you'll see.
