Do Spanish speakers think the Spain accent is elegant the way English speakers feel about English accents?

Rightly or wrongly, most Latin Americans think that the Castilian accent of Spain sounds snobbish. Most Americans and Canadians actually think that standard British English (RP) sounds snobbish too.

The story about the lisp in Castilian Spanish coming from King Philip II is just a myth, much like the story about Marco Polo bringing spaghetti back to Italy from China.

In reality, most Romance Language linguists believe that the Castilian lisp sound probably originated as far back as Roman times, in a local dialect of Vulgar Latin.

Since English is such a widely spoken language, people find it normal that non-native speakers bring their own accent into it. The thing is, Americans hardly ever learn a foreign language enough to speak it and they never really try to pronounce properly. They just take it for granted, the fact that everyone should speak English. And then there's the old stereotype about Americans being well... not very intelligent.... Another reason could be massive emmigration from all over the world towards the US and people coming back to thier native country after a few years and having a ridiculous accent and pretending to have forgotten their own language.

In Mexico people make fun of the stereotypical Spanish accent. Please note that there are many regional and local accents in Spain, just as there are many regional and local accents within England, some more intelligible than others.

.Of course the Spanish are much better at spelling than other Speakers of Castillian ( the real name of what we call Spanish) because their pronunciation corresponds better to the spelling of the language.

What some of the other answerers refer to as "the lisp thing" is called "ceceo."

Probably we -the American speakers- do not like the Spain accent, but that is the correct pronunciation. People from Spain sound every letter the way it should be. We -the Americans- speak with a lot of misspellings.

My girlfriend is half Mexican, and she thinks the Spanish accent is grating.

She told me an interesting story about how the lisp developed: Apparently, in the middle ages, there was a king who spoke with a lisp, and to make him feel better, the subjects in his court started speaking with a lisp as well. Soon, it spread, and now we have the lisping Spanish accent.
