I'm more of an optimist about the motivation of dentists than you are. I think that your dentist wants you to brush AND FLOSS everyday and have good oral hygiene. Believe me, there are enough other things that happen to your teeth (cracked, knocked out, etc.) to keep dentists in business forever.

The dentist recommends that you brush your teeth because it is the right thing to do. You should want to brush your teeth to ensure a healthy mouth because it is the smart thing to do. An exam and cleaning costs just as much as one filling, and it's an easier procedure, some dentist don't require a hygienist for this reason.

No, they do want you to really brush your teeth. That's why the dentist will often give you packets of floss and an extra toothbrush, to make sure.

Sure, procedures equal money, but dentists already have enough money as is.

DEAR MANNA EATER,
MAYBE YOU SHOULD WAIT UNTIL MOSES BRINGS YOU TO THE PROMISED LAND BEFORE YOU SEE A DENTIST, LOL.
WE WOULD MUCH RATHER HAVE ALL PATIENTS BRUSH AND FLOSS.
