The interpretation of this scripture has a clear conclusion to you because you live in a time when you know exactly what real image to apply to the words. The interpretation of this from ancient Hebrews, and even the intention of the author, were very likely entirely different.

And if God was telling them all about the universe, why didn't he say that the earth fell in a great arc around the sun? Or mention that the earth turned on its own axis, instead of allowing people to persist in the belief that the earth was the center of the universe and everything rotated around it?

The purpose of the Bible is to explain a spiritual universe, not a physical one, and therefore you can stop looking in it for evidence that it contains scientific facts that were not only impossible for authors and readers of the text to have, but that were also entirely irrelevant to their lives. It's just like how we don't look in Moby Dick for math problems and we don't look in Philosophiae Naturalis Principia Mathematica for poetry.

Well it also says it sits on pillars, has edges and mentions several places that you can see the whole thing from one place up pretty high. There is a reason the church freaked out when Galileo and Copernicus came along.

The thing is the Greeks not only knew it was round, they had calculated how round it was in 500 BC. That knowledge was available to well educated people. Too bad the guys that wrote the Bible hadn't heard.

We'd like to believe that ancient men were stupid neanderthals but we have incredible scientific advances even in earlier time. It's more than possible that ancient jews (who were technologically innovated for their time) had some sense of astronomy. Also, Job is more than likely not part of the original hebrew text but of greek origin and the greeks did have a profound knowledge of heavenly bodies.

Ancient Sumer Texts relate the positions of the planets and our sun in their tablets. They knew about Pluto. Something we didn't learn about until mid 1900s. The "gods" related all this information to them. Some were even taken into space to see it for themselves. They correctly described each planet they passed. They spoke of the hammered bracelet, known to us as the asteroid belt. It wasn't "God", it was the "gods" , the people who terraformed this planet and made us with their DNA and earth primate DNA.

There are tons of things in space.

Try Revelations 1:16 on how much the Bible knows about space. It claims that Jesus can hold seven stars, do you know how big stars are?

Oh right I see

you're telling me what you think that verse means

I see

we'll just ignore the bits about the world being flat, the sun orbiting the earth, bats being birds and rabbits chewing cud.

There are Chinese and Indian text that are much older than the Bible and speak accurately of things like the bacteria in the intestines - there are modes of "knowing" that we do not use today, but this, again, implies nothing about a sky daddy.

He looked at the moon floating in the night sky and applied it to the earth. Space is not nothing, it's the "soup" which contains all matter.
