Carpet is nasty and full of critters. Use some big throw rugs and a nice floor lamp. Toss some pillows on your couch and a throw. Put some flowers or plants here and there. Put some photographs of your family on your end tables in nice frames.
Make your house smell good. Burn a scented candle
Put a sun catcher or a stained glass art piece in your window.

What is your definition on homely. Home is a place where you rest and make yourself relax and comfortable. Very much dependent on what theme you want for your home before you decide on what mix of material you needed. Your theme can be classic, modern, contemptory, zen, futuristic, country, metropolitic, etc Indeed having woody flooring makes your house feel warm. Carpet may not be necessary. However, you may want you consider more on your lighting, colour mixed for your house to make it homely. Get a Interior you help you perhap.

Rug, window curtains, wall mirrors, some art on the wall (stuff you like) or family pictures, plants, throw pillows on chair and couch. folded blanket or throw blanket on couch or chair. coffee table, candles. Things you like and enjoy around you. Lamps are a good thing, they are more intimate and create a more homey comfortable atmosphere, then over head lights. If you want, email me a picture of the room you are talking about, and I will help you with some suggestions. maalru@sbcglobal.net

Yes, a rug can make a difference. Put it under your sofa and coffee table. If you have a chair/chairs near to the sofa, put them on it too. Sort of like a sitting arrangement.
