I was told by an idiot that Katana means long sword and Wakazashi means short sword but I want to know for sure.

Katana (刀 in Kanji) is sword.
Waki-zashi (脇差しin Kanji) literally means side-hold or side-feeble(weaker). So Wakizashi is short sword.

Most of Samurai had both Katana and Wakizashi.

katana means any curved one sided blade, it is a japanese word and is a general application for swords that meet the description, even if it came from alaska, in japanese katana does not specifically mean a jpanese sword, in the way we use it.
also, katanas made simply for the art, are called nihonto, sharp swords for combat are called shinken, and the katanas used for modern practices that are pale zen-ized forms of real sword work, like iaido are called iaito

I found no translation but only that they are samurai sword types.
