SDTV normally means that a TV has a digital tuner and will directly tune in all the digital OTA programing. Just to be sure, look at the specs and make sure it has an ATSC tuner. The ATSC tuner is what you need to avoid having to use a converter box.

For TVs that only have analog (NTSC) tuners, you would need a converter box to receive these channels. Cheap converters should show up starting in Jan 08, when the government starts giving out $40 off coupons for people to buy them.
