Didn't the TV show Myth Buster's cover this?

M67 has about a 5 meter kill radius. The phenomenon you're referring to might happen if you have low order detonation, or if for some freak reason the fragments are directed upward or away.

I had a low order detonation on a training range once. The explosion pealed the metal case of the grenade open like a banana.

Regardless, two feet away from a M67 grenade would probably kill you from the shock wave...

Since an M67 Fragmentation Grenade (as Example)has 6.5 oz filler of Comp B, & sends its Fragments and Notched Serrated Coil out at an Intitial Velocity of over 8,000 FPS you cant outrun the Lethal(Fatal) blast radius of 5 meters.

Your Best choice is to get flat to the Deck, feet towards the Grenade if possible to minimize your exposure to Fragments.

You may be injured still, but the severity is lessened by making as small a target as possible

If you can get low and behind cover so that you aren't hit by fragments you will probably survive, but need medical attention immediately. Two feet is very, very close.

An explosive detonation has two means of producing casualties, the fragments and overpressure or the blast wave. One rips you to shreds and the other crushes you. Both dissipate fairly quickly with distance, that's why you can use hand grenades on targets within throwing distance. But like you said - two feet? You're going to get hurt.

No, at 2 feet away you will probably be killed. Hand grenades are more than just an explosion. The inside of a current US M67grenade is machined in such a way that it breaks into lots of tiny pieces of metal that are thrown by the explosion.
The killing radius is about 20 feet. It produces casualties within an effective range of 49.5 feet by the high velocity projection of fragments. Fragments can disperse as far away as 750 feet.

Well, if I was only 2 feet away, I would not care if it is possible. I would at least give it a try, sounds better than standing up and learning if it would work.
Grenades fragment the metal casing and send pieces of metal flying everywhere. If, it on the ground, it is possible (NOT 100%) the metal be deflected more up and over you. If, it in the air the metal has more advantage to hit you.
