Depression is neither a single illness, nor does it have a single cause. Having a first degree relative with depression 'statistically' increases your lifetime risk - either by a genetic predisposition, or because you have been exposed to that person's behaviour when depressed and 'learned' some of the negative characteristics. Having said that, it is not a foregone conclusion. You are an individual human being - not a clone of your parents. Dismiss the though that it could happen. Even if you were affected at some point in your life (25% of us are) there is not proof that it is connected. One advantage you have over those who have not seen depression first hand is that you can more easily recognise it, and therefore seek help early. Outcome favours those sufferers who get help early and nip it in the bud.

Yes it does mean you have more of a chance, but many people face this dilema with almost any illness in the entire world, in doesn't mean you *will* get it though, just your chances are increased.

Science doesn't know the cause, because there are so many causes. Genetic factors, Stress, Viruses, Injury, Emotional upset etc etc....

There will always need to be a trigger factor though, and if the trigger doesn't come, then you may never get depression at all, regardless of your genetic risk, so don't worry.
