This is at the end of the dude's nidan test. The test is 2 hours long and then he has to show technical skill against random attacks though not in a full contact manner of course. I recorded the vid and he did pass the test.
The test itself is essentially a formality because of the many pre-tests but it is not a cakewalk.

I expected more out of someone testing for nidan but I've never done or sat through such a long test and the people are trying to balance safety and aliveness so my own evaluation would be dubious

Hard to say just from that. BASED only on that NO.
But I did not see the whole two hours so I can not fairly judge him just on that.
In my school we do full kumite not what they did, but things vary from style to style so again just from that clip no, but that was not really enough to judge on honestly.
one thing to remember once you have become a Shodan you are now just truly learning the martial arts many say and i agree.
(Sheiru - yes agree totally every class is a test, so the Sensei already knows before the test starts if they are going to pass because we all have bad days and if you have taught them correctly as he said each day is a test!)
(I think most are really attacking the test, not the people or person. I get the feeling the asker is stating it is poor quality training there.)

Two hours is not a long time for a black belt test by old traditional standards. My first shodan test was four hours long and the reason why they do this is to try and break you done and wear you out. As a person becomes more tired or fatigued they have to rely on their skill and knowledge more than their raw physical abilities. Also they tend to make mistakes if they don't keep their concentration and execute so you literally see the true essence of their abilities and skill.
While his technique was a little sloppy and could be a little more refined so where all the other students so as one would be-so most likely would they all tend to be since they are all probably from the same school. I do also believe the attacks and counters and throws could have been executed with more intensity and still kept a margin of safety. I have seen much worse from other schools and disciplines and most people don't want the hard core training nor can they devote a lot of time each week to developing their skills to their fullest extent.

After watching the video, I wouldn't. I did not see the body changing and combat effectiveness I would look for in a Nidan. However, I probably teach a different style of Karate that what he does. I do not know what his instructor is empasizing in training or what techniques he is looking for. If the student passed his test, I am sure he is qualified in that style.
If I test a student, then I know that he is going to pass. I have already watched him in class and know what he can do. Every day is a test.

every physique may be crushed in a combat. look on the ufc and others like that. they are the final warring parties interior the international and maximum of them have and could lose quicker or later. length does not consistently remember! it particularly is an benefit if its a wrestling experience. Now merely because of the fact somebody has a belt does not consistently propose they might combat. you will be able to desire to be attentive to your adversary. some adult men ought to kill you with their bare hands in the event that they actually be attentive to their stuff. Boxing won't supply help to in case you're flat on your lower back. You greater advantageous be attentive to a pair wrestling or jujitsu. Karate is constrained too on the floor. Karate may be an benefit in a outstanding combat. the element is a nicely located punch to the chin will deliver every physique down no remember what you be attentive to or who you're. a real martial artist shouldn't start up a combat its incorrect! The martial arts are for self-protection.

not even a green belt. None of them should be Yudansha.
When I tested for brown belt, I had to fight all the Black belts, who were not really pulling punches, plus an outside black belt. My seniors just wiped the floor with me.
The outside guy... I whipped his a$$.
I was hurting for a couple of weeks.
Funny, my Black Belt test was easier than that, but still no walk in the park.
Those people are wasting their hard earned money. It's what I call 'Take One's Dough'.

Everyone is being way to hard on the guy. It's a formal test for goodness sakes. No-one was trying to hurt anyone, it's a friendly little thing. I don't know if the guy COULD handle himself in more extreme situations, but this test in no-way simulated anything. Leave this guy alone, if you want to attack something, attack the test itself.

i understand from that short video that he and i practice different styles of martial arts, but that looked so slow and casual it was disgusting. especially for a black belt test...

*And what is with the 270 lb "Butterball" !!!*
The work outs in this school "Can't be" the soaked in sweat old school work outs!!
If they were that guy would have "Leaned down" a long time ago!!!!

I won't criticize his performance, but couldn't they have used some padding or protection in order to increase the aliveness of the testing?
