Headaches are complex problems and there is no easy solution.
It is best to find out the source/cause of your recurrent or chronic headaches.
Avoid bright lights and prolonged computer use.
If you are having recurrent or chronic headaches you need to see a health care provider. They can pick the proper abortive medication for the acute headache and possibly prescribe a preventive medication if your headaches are too frequent.
There are many abortive medications, they can be antidepressant medications, antihypertensive medications, anticonvulsant drugs and others specifically aimed at headaches.
As the true mechanism of migraines is not completely confirmed, so we do not yet have a cure. There is a current prevailing theory and the treatments are improving. Key among these treatments are the triptan medications. Other answerers have mentioned some they are taking in that class, but the best medication for you is best picked by your provider after viewing your headache history and diary and considering your headache pattern. Each medication works for different periods of time and has different types of onset so your headache history will guide the selection. All medications may well be fine drugs, but not work for each individual.
If you feel you need to see a doctor, go to the following site prior to your visit:
www.headaches.org
In the consumer area, see the educational resources tab.
Print and fill out the headache diary as shown.
See the How to talk to your headache doctor page.
I also recommend the pages on analgesic rebound, and diet.
Do not take Imitrex or any one else’s migraine medication without a health care provider’s approval.
I have seen patients with severe hypertensive crisis bordering stroke and cardiac problems due to taking a medication which was inappropriate for them. Also there are some types of migraine which are not recommended for the new migraine wonder drugs, ie. Hemiplegic and basilar artery migraines.
There are many non medication methods which are beneficial also, such as biofeedback, and acupuncture.
Seek the assistance of your primary care clinic and if no improvement a specialist in headaches.
It may take time to find the best combination to manage you symptoms, but you must work with the providers and give them the proper information to make the decisions. Knowing what information they need before you go in for an appointment can help the doctors help you.
As a fellow migraine sufferer, I wish you the best.

migraines with aura- the worst and i wouldn't wish it on anyone.
relpex, imitrex(the nasal has always worked best for me)
but even these things don't work completely and your day is still pretty much wrecked.
you can go to the doctor and they will give you some random crap reason why you are getting them and prescribe a preventative and send you on your way.
your occipital may be out of place, the muscles around could be tight. find a massage therapist or chiropractor that knows their stuff. if they do, they can do wonders. if its the occipital thats off, and you don't get it fixed then your migraines will never cease, no matter what kind of preventatives you take.
it's also hormonal. or you have a tumor(unlikely) or your diet is very poor. (stress can only trigger one if any of these things are in place)
there are trigger points in your neck and shoulders that you could press on that helps. the sternoscleidomastoid is one of them.
exercise, meditation, massage, all beneficial .
if you are currently having one now, press on muscles under your head and neck and shoulders. if it hurts where you press....you got the spot. also if you have no meds to relieve it, suck on ginger root.
taking tums also helps.
but believe me, when a migraine hits with aura i know the feeling of wishing someone would just take a pan and wack you over the head repeatedly until you pass out ( no one ever wants to do this to me)
good luck
oh and don't buy it that there are no cures....there certainly are and they don't come from the pharmacist or drug store

I have suffered with migraines since i was a small child, however I take Imitrex and mine are the tried and true migraines and they can last for days. I find taking a hot shower (as hot as I can get it) then laying down in front of a fan helps a lot. This helps constrict the blood flow and reduce the pain. I also make sure the room is dark and quiet. There are many times that this doesn't work and the heat of the shower makes the pain worse. I also stretch my neck while I'm in the shower (chin to chest). Weather this actually helps I'm not sure, however it will get me to relax. You tense up so bad when you have these headaches that it compounds the pain. I hope this helps relieve a little pain for you

Your GP can prescribe preventative medication that you take daily.
Sanomigran or pitzofen (not sure if spelt correctly).
There is also another drug which my GP mentioned, but I didn't take him up on it. It is a mild antidepressant, but is apparantly good for migraines.
I eventually opted for Chinese medicine. Zheng Tian Wan.
You take this daily and I found it to be really good.
When you stop taking this, your migraines may have completely disapeared, or will have improved.
Mine improved dramatically, so when I get migarines now, they are not as bad and I can actually carry on working through them. When I do get them, I take nurofen migraine tablets.
See a chinese doctor, or you can buy them online - usually cheaper.
I tried imigran from my doctor. The problem with these is that they do not work for every attack. If they don't work, you can't take anymore for that attack, you just have to put up with it.
I had some strange reaction to these tablets the second time I used them. It felt like my whole body was tingling with pins and needles, and it didn't work.
Good luck in finding something that's good for you. It may be a long process of trial and error.

I have a migraine right now, and I'm at work...i've had it for two days...there's really no cure. I take fourocet(sp?), it works sometimes, kinda just numbs you out. I don't like taking triptans, they make me sick...if you are at home, I would suggest taking excedrin, lay with two ice packs, one on your head and one on the back of your neck, drink ice cold soda...oh, and for some reason if you're a pickle fan, eating cold pickles helps, at least for me and my mother(who also suffers). Oh, and the aura...keep your eyes covered so it's dark...keep away from sounds or smells...I get an aura when migraines are triggered from smells. Hope this helps, feel better!!!

There is no medicine for H/A OR MIGRAINE. Not only these but for almost all painful diseases. Hence they become chronic.
Acidity, WORRY, excessive wind, cold , heat, sour food and sinusitis, constipation, intestinal inflammation; drugs,
Blockage in the flow of Vital Energy are their causes. None of them can be treated with medicine. Our 100% success in treating migraine &H/A confirms it.
Acupuncture is the best treatment. I can treat it with naturopathy and YOG, but how can you manage pl see.
Avoid late sleeping if possible; worry, spicy foods, sour fruits, stale bakery foods and alcohole.
Sweet foods, COCOANUT WATER,sweet fruits, milk, rice, SPROUTS, SALADS and good sleep will help you.
But you try one herbal remedy- two drops of drumstick leaves' juice in opposite nostril if one side pains and both nostrils if full H/A will give you rescue. Betel leaf helps but it isvery strong.
If it is acute pl search a painful point 3-6 mm behind your thumb nail and press it, H/A will disappear within 30 seconds.

Have you tried Imigran (sumatriptan)? You can buy it over the counter now, but obviously it's cheaper to get it on prescription.
It's not a cure, by the way, but it does relieve the symptoms in most people's cases extremely well.

You must stay in a dark, quiet room. Stay away from cheese, chocolate, oranges, and red wine. There are good medications for migraines. Fiorinal or Fioricet is one. (One has aspirin, the other has Tylenol) They also have butalbital (a barbiturate) and caffeine. There are also other meds for migraines. See your doctor. Good luck, sweetie. :)

There are no cures for this, but you can get preventative medications for them. I don't know what the names are but if you look on the Internet you'll be able to find them.
Alternatively you could go to see your GP.
I use Imigran injections and find that they are the only migrane releif that has worked for me, and I have used all of them.
