It would liven up debate no end, and if it could be kept purely philosophical and theological I'd probably be in favour of it, even though it's only happened in the past for about 37 years.
(they did manage to get up to three popes near the end).

But the possibility of violence and war should really dissuade anyone from approaching the idea. Though there may well be two or more Anglican communions soon, that's not quite the same thing.

I absolutely refuse to mention any idea that the post should be made open to more popular opinion, and utterly refuse to suggest the concept of Pope Idol.

There can only be one Pope on the Throne at a time. Ratzinger's not to photo-genic though is he? He looks like a ghoul.
