Okay, I think I have been had. I brought what I was told was a chihuahua, and we went to see him as a pup with mummy and all seemed fine. Now he has been delivered to my door and he is BIG for a small dog. I have not sent cash yet as we have been on holiday. They are expecting £500 at the end of the month. This pup is staying here to be loved, he is a great little chap but no KC or papers and I just want to know what you think I should do. He came from a Family home but they wanted him gone before he was 10 weeks (so he was still small) Mum is a definate Chi but have a look at him for me and please any advice, I do not think he is worth £500, I have already paid £87, Thanks. p.s we still love anyway, he is nearly toilet trained and such a lovely boy. http://i241.photobucket.com/albums/ff249/joleneapsey1/September2007168.jpg http://i241.photobucket.com/albums/ff249/joleneapsey1/September2007167.jpg ttp://i241.photobuckethttp://i241.photobucket.com/albums/ff249/joleneapsey1/September2007149.jpg.com/albums/ff249/joleneapsey1/September2007171.jpg http://i241.photobucket.com/albums/ff249/joleneapsey1/September2007170.jpg

That lovely puppy is definately not what the breeder said it was!

I would take him to the vets, who will confirm that he is not a pure bred Chihuahua. Then contact the breeders saying you will give them X amount for the puppy (perhaps £100 - £200) as you have been sold what is basically a mongrel.

If they moan say you are keeping the dog (if thats what you want to do) but will sue them as they have knowingly sold you something that is not as described. (Can't remember what the exact act is called, the Citizens Advice Beaurau will know).

You don't have to go through with this, but I suspect that if you mention you have spoken to the vet and have been in touch with the CAB they will back down sharpish.

You don't have to return the puppy even if they threaten to sue you for the balance. They are commiting fraud and are totally in the wrong.

Enjoy your puppy, he is adorable!

yeah he is not a purebred, but he can still make a wonderful pet, he IS very cute. However I would not pay 500 anything for a mixed breed. the fact that he HAD to be gone by 10 weeks is crazy, small breeds can run into issues after leaving mom, by 12 weeks old they are more able to handle the speraration and the health issues.

I would say a chi mix, my first guess what mixed with corgi given the colouring and what looks to be a long body, but he has the muzzle of a jack.....

he is not a pure chi, the person who told you that is lying, 7lbs at 10 weeks?? most chi's never see 7 lbs in their lifetime.

The fact that he has woven a place in yoru heart and home is gonna make things tougher. It may be once you talk to them and tell them what you know that they just let you keep him....you may try giving him back with the reasons why and out od desparation they may say just keep him then, but sounds like his breeders are bybs and like most care only about the money. Only you can make a decision, was anything written on the rest of the money at all or was it all verbal?

ETA : I went to look at a pic of a dog I had years ago, they look almost identical and she was a chi/pom mix and I got her as a rescue.

Ask those questions you just mentioned. But it would be better if you knew what breed you were looking to get, did research on the types of health problems that breed typically gets and then ask her specifically if her litters bitches and sires have been tested for those specific problems. I'm thinking she probably is a BYB. I think most legitimate breeders stick to one, maybe two breeds--not a variety of breeds. Plus, $100/puppy? Pretty inexpensive. Edited for add: Don't worry about asking anything in a way that might make her suspicious. Grill her about everything you want to know. Ask how many dogs/puppies are on site at any time and how you can be sure they're getting all the care they need if there are, for example, 40 dogs at all times on site.

Hiya, firstly, what a gorgeous healthy looking pup you have! I'm finding this one very difficult, he does have a terrier look about him, but its hard to say, small dogs seem to look bigger quicker, as the end result is a fairly small dog, so the size isnt really a problem, below is a link to my sister in laws chihuahua pups pictures, they were taken at 4 weeks, and you can see on the first pic, (this is with mum) that there really isnt alot in it,size wise.
However having said all that £500 is a ridiculous amount to pay for a pup without papers, you have a healthy pup that you love and that is ofcourse the main thing, but from a breeders point of view; you cant stud him, you cant show him, (these things may not be important to you) - but that is what £500 is for. A pup with no papers, I would say is worth half the price of one with papers. ie; you only have the breeders say so on who the father is? Mum could have got 'caught' at the park.
Like I say, you love him, he is gorgeous and healthy, what you do about the price is your call. Perhaps tell them you have been researching, and you feel £500 is a bit steep, but you want to keep the pup. Maybe you can come to an arrangement?
Hope you have many happy times with the cutie! Here are the links; Both taken at 4 weeks, 1st one is pup with mum, 2nd is brother and sister, boy is darker of the 2. x

It all sounds very suspicious. Yes, you've been had! Almost at any rate seeing as how you haven't paid all the money yet. We agree with the person who said get in touch with the chihuahua club. You'll be able to prove they've tried ripping you off and might let you have the puppy for the £87 you've already paid. Don't pay anymore money yet. Take the puppy to your vet and get him checked over in case there is anything wrong with him. You could tell the vet what has happened and see what he/she says about the situation. If you have anything in writing about the puppy make sure you keep it in a safe place because the breeder is most probably breaking the law....fraud.

Being that I see a number of dogs pass through my shop on a daily basis for years...I must say this is definately a chihuahua mix breed. A normal sized chihuahua should be up to 10 pounds by adulthood (1 year ). The pounds also depends on the quality of breeding that you get. This dog has a low long body with the definate white stripe up the forehead that are traits of the Pembroke Welsh Corgi ( Look that one up and you will see). Corgi's also have the long standing ears. I would take the puppy to a pet professional and ask their opinion. What you want to pay for a mixed breed pup is up to you, personally I would not pay a high price for a promised pedigreed dog that is in fact a mutt.

Very cute dog, but does not look like a pure Chi.
The coat is a bit long, but not long enough to be a long haired chi. Regardless what was said in the papers, unless a dog is registered, you run the risk that the pup is mixed with anything.

However, he's still cute and I hope he brings you happiness...the breeder on the other hand...well...no comment.

Mmmm....he's definitely a big lad for a Chi....but he's really cute!! Have to say, he has a look of a Corgi about him.....in fact his face and colouring is very much Corgi....but he's definitely not pure Chi. Did you only see his Mum? No, don't pay the full amount! I'd make an offer.....you certainly have a bit of a mixture on your hands there!! He's lovely though....I'm glad your going to keep him!!

He is beautiful!

However as for being a pedigree chi - he has the wrong shaped face!
I didn't realise before that you could get short-haired and long-haired chis. I have only seen the long-haired ones.
But take a look at this this link:
http://www.the-british-chihuahua-club.org.uk/AboutUs/BreedStandardSC.php

The chi has more of a pug's face whereas yours seems to have what I would agree with the previous answers is more terrier (Jack Russell?).

Personally I would rather have your puppy, but a JR cross would only cost around £120.

Hi jo, i've had a look at your lovely photo's, thanks, and can tell you what you already know - your little baby is NOT a chi ! My heart was lifted when i read that you intend to keep him anyway, how could anyone give HIM away just because he wasn't what they ordered? Good for you! Bless him he looks so settled and at home with your partner there. Think a cetain little man is going to get very spoilt and rule the roost ha ha, good on ya! Jo i think that he's a chi crossed with a jack russell, i've got one myself here, fast asleep after his sunday roast ha ha. He was advertised as a pure jack but when we got there i was disgusted! The house was a mess, freezing cold and she had two sets of pups with the wrong mums!!! Must have been a druggie, her son certainly was. We picked out our boy when he was two weeks old and she let us take him at 4/5 because she needed the bingo money! He was hard work and everyone thought he wouldn't survive but with tender loving care he did and is now a healthy, very little, 5 year old! You've been had over jo i'm afraid and i wouldn't pay them a penny more, f*****g shysters! People like that give genuine breeders a very bad name. Do yourself and little 'un a favour before you start the battle, get him micro-chipped in YOUR name and home address asap! That way theres no comebacks for the breeder, he's yours legally. The RSPCA do micro-chipping for£5.00 if you qualify under their rules, ie, if you're in receipt of state benefits. It shouldn't be much dearer than that with a private vet but ask about for good recommendations from friends and family first, you don't want to be done over twice! Your little mate is far too big to be a chi baby, they're normally weeny little things but if you look at little man's feet, his paws are huge ha ha, bless him. He was lucky to be delivered to your door and not someone who was insistant on a pure bred chi eh? My lad looked like a jack first of all but then his face changed the older he got and now he looks like a fruit bat with four legs ha ha but i love him with all my heart and wouldn't have him any other way. I wish i was as clever as you then i could post his picture up for you to compere yours with, not been a computer buff for very long ha ha. Well, we know what he's not but i think we're all agreed on one thing, he's bloody lovely whatever he is. Good luck with him jo, i'm sure you'll all have many many years of love and laughter with him and he'll have the same with you x
