I'm looking to first car for myself, and I'll just say I am able to get a nice one as my first. The thing is, what people tell me, including my parents is that if I get a nice car as my first, I know I will be devastated when anything happens to it, even a minor scratch. And if I drive it improperly, hitting something, it would be expensive to repair.

But then, another part of my mind says that if I'm able to have a full license, I'm qualified enough to be a decent driver, being capable of being careful.

So I don't know what to do. Would it make sense if I got a crappy car to learn on for a year or 2, letting me make mistakes on it, and when college comes around, I get a nice car?

Does that make sense? Do other people actually do that?

Or did anyone here get a nice car as their first, and was responsible with it?

Well my daughter has a Saturn Sky. I bought it for her, but she is paying for gas and insurance. She is responsible, so I trust her to treat the car respectfully. If she does wreck, however-it will be on her and I am not paying any money or lending any money in any way. My first car was a 1982 Cutlass Supreme. Idk if that is nice to you, but that car was the best out there. I was completely responsible for it if anything happened. I never wrecked because I took driving school and learned all of the basics before I even owned that car.
But I'd suggest that you do get an affordable car first like a Corolla or a Civic and learn all of the basics before you get a nicer car.

Best of Luck.
