You have to hone your instincts. Every now and again I come across someone and the alarm bells start going off. People who are charming on the surface but have a knack of putting everyone else down.

Dear danachelchan, got your name wrong, sorry, but you are quite correct in all that you say. Some people can put on a strong front of appearing to be a tower of the community whereas,in other environs, they are screaming nutters out to cause hurt and chaos. Women seem to be the main victims of these cretins and a victim can suffer for years without anyone else, including family and friends, ever twigging on.
It usually ends up in physical violence towards females and I do think that these idiots should be locked up for an unspecified amount of time. However, wife beating does not constitute a psycho because a psycho will feel persecuted and believe that people are talking about them (Paranoia). Sometimes, this condition will turn into Schizophrenia and, if not treated quickly, you will have big trouble on your hands and a paranoid schizo is quite able to take human life.
Mental illness is a weird bunny but it is something that is always with us and lot of ordinary people are suffering from some horrendous illnesses of the mind. We live in a dangerous world to start with and we should practise calm choice at all times. Do speak to people at all times and give them every opportunity to open up to you and you will be able to see how they are as a person and then you can make your educated choice of what to do.

What is a psychopath?
A psychopath has no concern for the feelings of others and a complete disregard for any sense of social obligation, though superficially they seem like a normal person. They can be charming and polite on the surface, but this only disguises their lack of empathy. They seem egocentric and lack insight of any sense of responsibility or consequence. Their emotions are thought to be superficial and shallow, if they exist at all. They are considered callous, manipulative, and incapable of forming lasting relationships, let alone showing any kind of meaningful love. They typically never perform any action unless they determine it can be beneficial for themselves.
Since psychopaths cause harm through their actions, it is assumed that they are not emotionally attached to the people they harm; however, according to the PCL-R Checklist, psychopaths are also careless in the way they treat themselves. They frequently fail to alter their behavior in a way that would prevent them from enduring future discomfort. Dr. Joseph Newman contends that the behavior displayed by psychopaths is the result of "an inability to process contextual cues."
It is thought that any emotions which the primary psychopath exhibits are the fruits of watching and mimicking other people's emotions. They show poor impulse control and a low tolerance for frustration and aggression. They have no empathy, remorse, anxiety or guilt in relation to their behavior. In short, they truly are devoid of conscience. However, they understand that society expects them to behave in a conscientious manner, and therefore they mimic this behavior when it suits their needs.

There is actually a certified method of finding out if someone is a psychopath, and it is called the psychopathy checklist. From what I remember from the conference I attended, the list consists of twenty features (e.g. glibness/superficial charm, pathological lying, lack of realistic long-term goals, etc) and each feature is worth two points. If the person being assessed scores more than 26, they can be certified as a psychopath.
However, this method is most likely out of date now, as with every method of psychological assessment revolving around mental illness. It does not mean that the person is dangerous if they are a psychopath though, so I wouldn't jump to conclusions. Type 'psychopathy checklist' in Google and see what comes up =oD

Psycho is short for psychotic and belive me youd know, i know someone whos VERY close to me with this mental health illness, He wont drink anything unless hes made it as he thinks people are trying to posion him, he wont answer the door or phone for the same reason, his logical thinking has gone, theres other things too but its still abit raw to me at the moment to go into detail. Others may laugh and joke but its painfull for those who suffer with it and have to deal and pick up the pieces with it.

Psychotic is one thing, there are also neurotics who can do a lot of damage in your life. And wow, there are even more of those!
There aren't any ways to tell early on when you know them. Unless they do something real crazy on first meeting. That is unlikely because they have learned to appear normal at first.
Just don't trust too soon. I know everyone says to be trusting, but don't be, until you know someone awhile.

Oh well done you have opened the flood gates of small minded stigma here!!
Why do people assume someone with mental health problems is going to harm every one?
Will people ever learn?

They send you threatening emails, block you, hurl abuse at you through their answers to other peoples questions and then write whole questions about you claiming that 'you' are stalking them!
