I have a labador/doberman mix he's about 1yrs old now. I try not to put him in his cage when im not at home so he can roam cause I dont get to run him like I want to at times. My trash can is in the kitchen under a shelf and I use bunge cords to hold it in which worked for the first couple of weeks or month. But now he some how figured out how to move the cords and pull down the trash can and have trash everywhere downstairs when I get home. What can I do to keep him out of the trash and also keep from having to put him up while am at work or asleep??

Keep your trash under the sink and lock the cabinet with the child safe kind of lock.

Why not put the trash can where he really cannot reach it - like outside? In my experience, once a dog discovers how to get into the trash, they won't ever give up on trying to do that.
Getting toys that he has to work on to get food out of sound like a good solution for your dog's boredom. Here are a few that you could try:

I like the UFO-shaped one, and my pup like the bottle-and-rope one, but it is SO LOUD. Just f.y.i.

here's a whole page full of fun toys. Freezing a Kong or Twist and Treat will slow your dog down too - you can use plain yogurt or peanut butter to cement your dog's food in there. Good luck!

You should play with him more often and he might forget the trash. When you are home, teach him not to go near the trash. supervise him near the trash at all times. When he gets near, make an alarming sound that prevents him to go near. Keep doing this everyday so he knows what to do.

Actually the answer is simple, take out the trash daily. As for sleeping you will need to work on that one yourself, maybe more attention when you first get home from work, a nice walk/run so hecan burn off energy before its bedtime.

we had the same trouble with our beagles. after trying a number of different things my wife got mad and stuffed the dog's head into the can and beat on the outside. the first treatment cured our oldest one but she had to do it twice to get the youngest one (then 8 months old) to leave the trash alone. it's been a couple of years now and we can leave them alone all day without troubles

THere are some smells that dogs don't like. I don't know what they are but do some research and then some how make the trash can smell like that.

Look on Ebay for a device called a "scat mat". It's a rubber mat that you can put down that shocks his paws when he steps on it. Put it in front of the can. The shocks are mild-I had a 7 year boy old that stepped on it for entertainment, so It won't hurt the dog. Once he learns what it is, you can even turn it off and leave it there.

I have had problems with my lab in the past. We sprayed "KEEP OFF" spray on couches, and everything our dog was not aloud to be on, or chew. You can also try "bitter apple spray". You can get keep off, and bitter apple at your local pet store.

take your trash out before you leave in the morning so there is nothing in there to entice your dog.
