Father Phan, a native of Vietnam, is a former president of the Catholic Theological Society of America. In an essay that touches on some themes of his book, he writes, “A pluralistic theology serves as a strong reminder to Christians that non-Christian religious traditions may and indeed do contain teachings and practices that will help Christians know and love God.”

Yes, indeed. I think the catholic church is wrong to believe that it is the only revealed religion while it has nothing to learn from others. I think that sooner or later they will understand that this is a huge mistake that will fire back on them.

This just strains my faith that the Vatican would find that last statement to be heretical. How arrogant and condemning the “Vatican” has become-and how distant from the original teachings of Christ-who was no fan of the religious leaders of his day and their adherence to a “law” without heart and sense.

I agree with Ed H. and I'm "Catholic", when convenient. Christian sinner all the time.

That's what the Vatican is for(among other things); to define and protect the teachings of Catholic Christianity and to decare what is compatible and what is not with the Catholic Christian Faith.

If I choose knowingly to "violate dogma" of the Catholic Church, I would be a hypocrite to claim to teach in the name, under the authority and in the communion of the Catholic Church.

Fr Phan could start another religion if he finds Catholic Christianity too restrctive and annoying. There seems to be a new religion started every day. There are over 30,000 Protestant ones alone and most of them claim to be going by the Bible Alone.

If he is saying that those "religions" that have many "gods" lead the to Heaven, then it is right that he should be investigated.

The ONLY way to Heaven is through a personal relationship with, and an recognition of the Lordship & Salvation of, Jesus Christ. All other ways lead to Hell.

As God, Himself, said, "I am the Lord thy God. Thou shalt have no other gods before Me." His words are clear.

Well I think that if they didn't defrock Schillebeeckx for his coarse, and clear heresy, then Phan will certainly get by with this rather mild statement.
