I am not a very experienced traveller but I would like to experience the culture and community of the places I will be visiting. I'm afraid that a tour group will drain all the "life" out of my experience, however I am a bit aprehensive of going it alone.

I encourage you to go on your own because - as you said - a tour group will prevent you from meeting the locals as you will be wandering around like sheep together. Follow the similar route as an organized tour (check a few travel sites on the web), opting to join a day tour (or even a 2-3 day tour) if you feel like it. You will meet far more interesting people this way and will feel proud of yourself by the time it is time to head home. I travel on my own all the time and find it to be great fun!

I agree with coluche501, I also often travel alone and seeing your question I think you will be better of alone too.
You can combine traveling alone with day-trips or even short travels with a group, that way you can go to places that you have troubles going alone.

If you stay in hostels you easily meet other people traveling alone, when you stay in hotels you need to do a bit more work to meet people.
But traveling alone you meet people more easily than you would in any other situation.

There are a lot of people in Italy who speak English well enough for you to travel without problems. (And you can always ask for help at the tourist office if you do get stuck.)

Do not just go to the bigger towns but do also stay in the smaller towns and villages.
I think a month is a perfect time!
Just avoid July and August, firstly it will be real crowded and you would have to book ahead, and it can be rather hot in a good summer.

i went to italy (rome) a few months back.

i'm a reasonably experienced traveller from australia.

we went for eight days but not with a tour group. we found it ok - we just got up every day and did our own thing.

When we went to large tourist attractions, (ie the colloseum and the vatican museum) there wasn't much signage in english, so it's worth getting a guide for the day to take you around those type of places. you really do get your value for money getting someone to explain those places in english.

make sure you get a good guide book explaining what the local customs are and where you should and shouldn't go and you'll be right.

If you're an adventurous person it would be great travelling alone like me.i went to Pampanga,Olongapo,Batangas,Bataan,Cavite Philippines;Hongkong;Japan, alone and it was so really great.Fun and exciting! Now i am enjoying travelling cities and provinces here in japan and planning to go Singapore next time. It's wonderful and great travelling alone.Meeting new friends and experiencing new things. With the tour group you can't test everything because there's someone to ask to and be dependent on your companion. There's no challenge.Challenges are adventure.Meeting new person is great.Another country another place another kind of friends another kind of companions.Try it!

Ity is a robust itinerary...do not pay attention to the others. particular perhaps in wintry climate it should not be as "high-quality" yet you have got the great thing in regards to the crowds not being there and particular places would be extra romantic and additionally you will see factors of interest extra effective without 50 million japanes those with cameras pushing you everywhere. am i able to offer you a preparation however? On day 7...attempt to spend the night in Sorrento/Capri...this is ideal at night with all of the lights on the shore. To be honest, the fewer you reside in Naples the extra effective...fairly at night. That place is a multitude...however the encircling aspects like Sorrento etc are ideal. with the aid of the way...you besides might neglected out Venice...it quite is a ought to in the wintry climate seeing this is impossible in the summertime with all of the vacationers. yet i assume it is going to be somewhat plenty mutually with that too...perhaps next time...? desire you appreciate it plenty... p.s.
