HI!
Breeding is a factor as to the intelligents of any dog so that means if the Golden come from a great breeding background then they will be very intelligent! Usually Golden's are very smart! I have 3 Golden here with me of different ages and I have found all my guys here to be very intelligent and very easy to train and they keep the traing in their heads too!
I Have said many times that I never met a dumb Golden only dumb owners. That seems to hold very true! LOL
Golden's are ranked as one of the more intelligent breeds as far as smarts go.
You will need to find someone who breeds not only for looks, and conformation but intelligence too. It should be a package deal with breeding these very smart and beautiful dogs, also one that does all the health screening with their Goldens too.
Go look for a very resposible breeder and then choose one who has the whole package in their dogs.
Good luck with your search!
ADD: Thanks Dobiegang! Hope you have a wonderful day!
Oh tell your friends that they dont know what they are talking about and that you got a true answer for someone who really knows what they are talking about ok!

As with any breed, there are individual dogs that aren't overly bright but as a "breed" Goldens are considered very intelligent. It does depend on how well bred the dog is, and again, you have a range. You can have a well bred dog that's as dumb as a box of rocks (although, not often) and a super smart dog from a byb (not often either).
However in the working dog arena, Goldens are high on the list of desirable dogs. You will often see goldens as a service dog for a person with a disability - a guide dog for the blind, a hearing dog, an another type of assistance dog. They are very easy to train and they love to work. I've found this with retrievers in general (labs and Goldens).
On the whole, my experience is, Goldens are reallly smart dogs. You get good ones and bad ones - but far more good ones are out there... that's why people love them so much.

Like all breeds of dogs, some of them are incredibly smart, others mind numbinly stupid. (But so adorable!) The site I found lists them as intelligent, though.
Origin: Great Britain
Life Expectancy: 12-14 years
Height Range: 20-24 inches
Weight Range: 60-85 Ibs
Colors: Shades of gold and cream.
Temperament: The lovable, well mannered, and intelligent dog Golden Retriever is known to be a dog of great charm and charisma. They are easily trained and always patient with children. This breed makes an excellent family companion for about anyone who is willing to accept them. While not the best guard dog they do excel in watchdogging, loudly signaling their masters for unknown intruders. The Golden Retriever loves to be around other people and should never be left alone for a long period of time. Due to their desire to please and capacity for learning, this dog breed is well reknown skillset and affection towards their master. They have many talents including tracking, hunting, narcotics detection, agility competition, performing tricks, and obediance training.
Trainability: Excellent; extremely eager to learn. Can be taught just about anything.
Health: Generally a very healthy breed. Prone to bloat and dwarfism.
With Other Animals: Great. Has very little guard instincts.
Children: Excellent; can be too affectionate with toddlers.
Climate: Tolerates cold climates well. Can handle warm climates as well, but requires shaded areas.
Indoor/Outdoor: Either. This breed is moderately active indoors and will need at least a medium sized yard to play around in. They can be kept within an apartment, but requires exercise daily. This dog loves to fetch and play with toys.

It all depends on the individual dog and its genetics. Most goldens are very intelligent and fairly easy to train, but of course there is always an exception to the breed! Goldens are not stupid dogs and there is not really a stupid dog at all. You just have to get them to understand what you want them to do and some are faster than others at learning that stuff, just like humans!

often what is called "smart" in a dog is either 1. easily trained to do tricks or obey commands. or 2. displaying human-like characteristics which means mischievous in a champanzee style.
Notice that the two are a bit contradictory. As a breed, the golden is smart in the trainability sense because it is a retriever type.

How smart or easy to train an individual dog is is largely based on its breeding and genetics. Yes they are used as service dogs but 90% are not suitable for reasons of health temperament or trainability and work ethic. This isn't just labs its with any breed of dog. Call any service dog training school and ask them what % of dogs are suitable for training overall and out of that what % succed in graduating.
Look at the parents, thats the best guess you can have as to any individual dog. Puppies can also be evaluated by a experienced breeder or trainer so make sure you discuss what you want in your dog with the breeder. No 2 pups are identical and they will try to match you with the best pup for you. A good breeder wants all matches to be successful so all homes are forever homes. Pet shops and many newspaper ad breeders just want to sell the dog with no regard to it or you once money changes hands.
A shelter pup or young dog may be a very good idea for you, they evaluate them thoroughly and many have lived with foster families who will know the individual dog better.

Goldens are used frequently as service dogs for disabled people. They go to school with children in wheelchairs and to the market to help adults shop. They have to learn many words and commands to this plus have a steady even temperament. I would say that makes them very smart dogs.

I just handed over a Golden foster to a new home yesterday. She was very smart in every way. Most well bred dogs are very smart.
Dogs are often as smart as the person who trains them. If you don;t train them then yes they will all be clueless.

Yeah Goldens are dumb.. That's why they are so versatile and able to do so many things.
Dogs that are bred for a reason, working, herding, retrieving, Not dumb.. Dogs that are bred to merely sit on your lap and look cute... Might be considered dumb.. If in fact there is such thing as a dumb dog.
