She has a really bad pain on her left side, around the ribs, she's had that for ages, about 3 weeks now. She went to the doctor's about that and they gave her some pills which she took but they had side effects (really bad headaches) so she stopped taking them and now just has nurofen - effectless. She has recently got a high temperature - 99 - and a bad sinus headache. Anyone know what it could be?
Please don't give advice telling me to get her to a doctor's; I'm already trying.

Could just be a trapped nerve and the pain is affecting other parts alternatively this could be something serious. Only tests will find out for sure. Do more to persuade her.

pain on the left side is not an appendix since it happens to be on the right side and much lower than the ribs. could be several things like plueresy or inner lung lining infection or sever bronchitis or a blood infection that has irritated/infected her spleen. she should ask for a different prescription if those are giving her headaches. some antibiotics can do that. raised temp means infection. if she's having night sweats, sustained low grade fever (99 is not high), loss of appetite, weight loss, it could be tuberculosis and those antibiotics can make you feel like poop for sure. she should at least call her doc and discuss it with him. it may just mean calling in a different drug for her. but doing nothing is a sure fired way of just getting worse. nurofen is nothing more than ibuprofen. it has anti inflamatory effects and she might need something stronger like lortab 5 or low dose percocet. you don't mention any kind of aspirin/blood thinner regime so i'm assuming it isn't heart related. if it was nitro tablets and she was getting headaches from them, then you absolutely must convince her to see a doc. if that's it, the pain she's feeling is her heart slowly dying form a lack of oxygen. but if that was the case, he'd have given her some kind of blood thinner to go along with the nitro tablets and changed her diet drastically.

the information you have given is very limited. Any history of trauma to the area? What started the pain? What did they say was wrong with her when she did go to the doctor's? What medication did they give her? The heart and spleen is on the left side and stomach and some bowels. Temperature is usually indicative of infection somewhere. You may resort to scare tactics...you know "if you don't see a doctor you could die, I will be left here without you etc" Sounds like she needs follow-up to make sure she has nothing ruptured internally, or leaking internally, and to make sure it's not serious. You can't force her and if she won't go, she has chosen to suffer with the pain. Don't feed into her behavior.

I'm really hope you are OK and ur mum gets better soon.
If the pain is around the back area more it could be an infection in the kidney that will cause headaches too. Or if its more in the front it could be her colon, liver spleen or stomach. It may also just be a pulled Muscle you'd be surprised at the pain that can give you.
If The pain killers are not working she should tell her local Chemist they can advise on what will work and their pretty good on knowing about symptoms and illness too.
Good Luck and *hugs* for you xxx

You said dr. prescribed medicine that gave headache as side effect. It is possible he gave her nitrites as anti-anginal medicine. They are known to cause headache. In fact this is a sign that they are working. Sometimes patient is asked to keep a tablet under his/her tongue & spit it when headache starts.
So, it may be a heart problem. At least keep those tablets ready, may cause headache but could be life saving in an emergency.
Considering she has coronary artery disease, a little aspirin may help her (75 mg. daily). But check BP regularly, it should not be high.
According to your details, chest pain started before the fever + sinus trouble. That is significant.
Good luck!

You said that the Dr's gave her pills that caused side effects, but what were those pills prescribed for? Maybe all she would need to do is contact the Dr and they can prescribe a different type of medication.

Maybe she has bronchitis or something. If she has a sinus infection, she doesn't want that to go untreated, that can become VERY serious.

The pain on the left side is worrying,if it was appendix she would have been in too much pain so sounds like a virus, maybe some flu virus.Paracetemol would lower the temperature better than nurofen.

It sounds like it could be Pleurisy, I have suffered with this and it is agonising, I couldn't take any deep breaths I felt like I had been kicked in the ribs by a bull, anti bio-tics soon cured me of it, I never want to go through that again.

Could be pleuresy (pleuritis). A variant of this is Bornholm's disease, especially if there are many cases in the area.

This is just a stab in the dark. Keep trying to get your mom to the doctors.

Well, if she will not go to the doctor, the only thing you can do is possibly help her get better with healthy food. Start cooking her healthy meals. Lots of vegs and fruits. A lot of water also!! Good luck!
