I have posted a few questions on here in the past and I must say that 95% of the answers are from people really looking to try and help or give their advice. However, there always seems to be someone that puts in an unmerited response. For example, because I've bred my dog I'm automatically a puppy mill (and shame on me for not having had her spayed!).

Obviously each person has the right to his or her own opinion, but I don't think it's quite fair to judge so quickly. I am an educated person who diligently selected a sire for my purebred dog. My dog is a breed that tends to have small litters (and at considerable costs). We intend to keep one of the puppies (the other will go to the sire) and if there are any additional puppies we plan to give them to good homes with people we know. We are absolutely not in this for the money. On the contrary, we bred our dog for the love of the dog and the breed.

Please think twice before making assumptions.

It depends on the person answering. I mean, if they actually read the question, or know that you breed pure breeds, and sell for a nice profit, then alot of them would shut up. I mean, there's a difference between people who just let their dogs get pregnant and have litter after litter with not much care to what happens to the pups just so long as they don't have to pay for the dog to be spayed, and people like you who make it more of a business and hobby, and for others who love the breed. I think it's good what you're doing, at least people know what they're paying for.
Yes, people will have their opinions, but just listen to those who actually have something decent to say. :)

What type of dogs are you breeding?

I think maybe BYB is the more correct term. People assume that if you have no idea about a stud agreement and first pick, that MAYBE you really don't have a clue about breeding. Which leads to the assumption that you may not have done the health clearances necessary for your breed. I have Newfies, which are a giant breed with health problems. Hip dysplasia being one of the most common. Frenchies, however, have a HIGHER occurance of CHD than Newfies.
So, when bringing a litter into the world in a breed where that is a common problem, health clearances NEED to be done. No excuses not to. The sire and the dam should have had that done. There are alos other health clearances that Frenchies need to help ensure the puppies are healthy and some family...even if they are a friend...does not get a pup with problems.
So...in short....people that don't seem to have a clue about breeding prectices and ask those things here, probably have not done the necessary things prior to breeding. Let's not even get into weather the parents are actually show/breeding quality.
When someone breeds in that manner, they are in fact BYB.
If you are breeding to IMPROVE the breed...which is the reason real breeders breed....ALL bases are covered to ensure that only the best and healthiest stock is ever used for breeding.

no, you aren't a puppy mill, you are a backyard breeder.

I don't like what you do based on my experience as a volunteer at the Humane Society. I saw so many beautiful dogs and cats, kittens and puppies languish there, stuck in small cages waiting for someone to love them. They had so much to give. These were the "lucky" ones, the others at Animal Control were put down after 5-15 days due to lack of homes and it didn't matter if it was an old stray tomcat or a young mother with puppies.

I think before you allow your dog to breed, you go and observe first hand the results of too many puppies in the world. Ask yourself if it is your right as a human being to sentence other living beings to death through your actions. Even if your dogs find homes, it means death for the puppy waiting on death row who could have been adopted by the person adopting your puppy. Just go and see. Go and see. Open your eyes to the misery of these animals.

The reason you got jumped on is because some people on here tend to think that by you having a litter of pups, you put several other dogs to death at a pound. These people think that they will save every other dog out there or that every dog out there needs saving. There are other people on here who are genuine breeders and have seen the horrors produced when someone just throws two dogs together, just for the sake of breeding, these people are the serious ones.
Having said all that, I need to ask you though, how is it that you bred your dog "out of love and for the breed"? How did your breeding contribute to the betterment of the breed? I could care less if you made any money or not, I am just interested in how you justify breeding your dog for the reasons you stated... Please, let me know.

Many people have an agenda. And using the word "puppymill" sounds so notorious that it spreads the agenda. Last year I sold or gave away 17 puppies, but we had a couple of bigger litters from the girls. The year before I sold 5. So far this year, I have sold 2 and given away one. By the end of the year, I will probably sell five or six more that are little right now. I have no guilt about it, and neither should you.

As long as your dog is loved and well taken care of that is all that is important. Let everyone else say or think what they want. Life is short. Let people with an agenda keep it and you just go on with your life.

Most people get offended when people ask questions on a public forum about a dog they want to breed or have already bred. If you are going to breed a dog, you should have answered any and all questions you may have LONG before you even consider actually breeding.

Also, you may have failed to fully explain the situation- how is anyone on here supposed to know your background or reasoning if you only ask a short question? If all we see is "What day of a dog's heat to breed on", how can we differentiate between someone who IS just trying to make money off puppies, and someone who has done their homework, but has just found conflicting information about the best day to breed on an wants some professional opinions? We're on here trying to discourage people from putting their dogs and risk and overpopulating the world with sub-standard dogs, and if you don't identify yourself as a different kind of breeder, you're going to get jumped on. Personally, if our harsh answers can discourage even one potential BYB or puppy mill from starting, I feel it justifies any toes we step on from people who actually do know what they're doing.

I agree with you. I have a purebred Yorkie male, and a purebred female, and I am going to breed them once. I see nothing wrong with this. I have also saved several pets in the past from being put to sleep, so I do understand what some are saying. I will not be one of those "puppy mills". I know there are alot of animals that need to be rescued, and I probably will rescue another one in the future. I just think people react too quickly on here, like you said. I have a niece that wants one of mine and a sister too, so I know they will go to good homes. Think before you answer.

People should just leave other people alone when it comes to letting their dog have puppies. It is the person that owns the dog that it is THEIR decision and not the other person. Yes it is their Opinion but, people don't have to go around and get angery and fowled mouthed about it.
