one shot at deer size game will not hurt.going to rifle range to practice and shooting 20 or 30 times and his shoulder will be a little sore the next day.if the young man is sensitive to recoil, then accuracy will suffer.i would recommend a smaller caliber rifle or one with a muzzle break to lessen the recoil and get a good high quality scope for hunting.he will be a better shot and if taken care of the rifle will last a lifetime.

An eight pound rifle chambered in .30-06 Springfield discharging a 180 grain bullet at 2,700 feet-per-second generates 20.3 pounds of felt recoil at the shoulder. Hold the rifle firmly against your shoulder and make sure the scope isn't too close to your face. You should be able to handle this without any problems. If you think this is too much recoil then use the 150 grain bullets for a recoil index of 17.6 lbs.
For comparison: The .458 Winchester magnum (which I regularly shoot) produces more than 60 lbs. of felt recoil at the shoulder. I weigh sixty pounds more than you and am... Well let's just say I'm a LOT older but like you I was somewhat apprehensive about the recoil on the 4-5-8 before I actually shot it. Then chatting with an on-line friend (Garrett) I learned that the .460 Weatherby magnum generates more than 99 lbs. of felt recoil.
Good luck.

No it won't actually hurt you. But recoil is different for different people. Some people are bothered by certain recoil to the point where it affects their accuracy or makes using their rifle unpleasant. And some find this happens even with a 30-06.
Whether you will I can't say.
The best idea is to shoot one a few times at the range or belonging to someone else. If its okay, buy one:)

Recoil from the cartridge is manageable for a big thirteen year old, or even a smaller, younger one. But the important factor is going to be how well the stock fits. If he's that much taller than his classmates, it should be fine. If he's normal height but chubby, it may kick the snot out of him.
