It all depends on what you want it for. The most accurate hand gun in the world is 22lr (1 inch grouping at 50 yards) But all that accuracy won't do no good if a bad guy breaks in your house.
If all your gonna do is shoot it at the range, Build yourself a Ruger MKIII
If you are gonna carry it and use it for defense, Glock's, HK's Springfield's, and Sig's are more than enough accurate

In general revolvers are more accurate than pistols.
It is all a matter of what type of shooting it is. The .38 super, for example was/is a very popular round for auto pistol competition shooters, .45 has also been around forever as one of the favorite comp calibers so there is really no select caliber which is more accurate than the rest.
.357 Mags can be extremely accurate as well as a .44 Mag. (among others). It really all depends on the shooter. Pick a caliber that you are comfortable with and practice.
It is a matter of personal preference, and skill.
An accurate gun in the wrong hands is as useless as throwing a brick at the target.

As mentioned before, revolvers tend to be more accurate than semi-auto pistols but this is simply a broad generalization. Some semi-autos are more accurate than some revolvers. Any caliber, when matching good ammo to a good gun, can be very accurate but the gun selection is more influential toward accuracy than the caliber. Additionally, while "tack driving" accuracy is more likely with a revolver, most high quality handguns will be more accurate than you are able to shoot them. They are seldom precision weapons like some rifles. I am very happy with my Glocks, both chambered in 40 s&w.

From the answers you've gotten already you may be able to see that it's the shooter more than the gun or caliber. Practice, practice, practice. If you want to be good with a handgun ,get one you can afford to shoot a lot. I would recommend a S&W K-22. 4 or5 hundred rounds every Saturday for a year or 2 will get you proficient.

For a first time handgun, Glock 19.
Light weight, accurate out of the box, and when you learn to shoot that trigger, you can shoot anything including revolvers accurately
Plus 9MM ammo is cheaper than most rounds, except maybe .38 special or .22 LR

ALL modern handguns are as accurate as the shooter. There is no magical caliber/handgun combination that is going to make a lousy shooter a distinguished expert shot.
Best.

If you want to shoot targets, the .38 special revolver can be handloaded for tack driving accuracy.

It is not the Firearm but the person shooting it which determines how accurate it will be.*
