It is terribly arrogant and I have yet to meet a christian who exists who doesn't make me feel this way ...even if they aren't in your face about it. When you are caught up in such a cult, the organization makes a you feel like you gain points by converting people... like, oh god will love me more if I convert a catholic but oh boy if I can get a atheist maybe I won't have to go up to the altar this sunday!!
Christians really can't even fathom how liberating it is to think freely and not always feel like you are under foot of the pastor/preacher or whole religious organization. They can't imagine a life without constant condemnation or having to repent every single second because they did something that was totally human.
Some churches teach you to take this exact point of view... they say the atheists life are so empty , can you imagine not having a god to pray to and talk to...( you know the whole "god told me this" routine) Other churches make the congregation feel this way about not only atheists but every other denomination even if it is just a non fundamental christian or baptist... granted they are slightly different and maybe not so radical... it's like how the f do you know what is right and true? Did god tell you? Did god come down and have tea and a chat about it with you because you are sooo special...and since you are the only one who believes in the "real version of christianity" he only reveals himself to you...
It makes me so angry...

Sorry I rambled a bit there...

I don't think they do however it might have been some in the past that have change just like some in religion have change their minds and have a disbelief in God vice versa. Most Christan's think that their can be a change in unbelievers and they think they can do it. With the way the churches have demonstrated themselves lately a lot have left and it is a poor witness to the world what religion has done. In revelation it speaks about Babylon the Great the world empire of false religion and warns that her people get out of her if they do not want to share with her in her sins, So there is a empire of false religion. A person will change if they want to change not because someone arrogantly wants to shove it down their throats or have it force by law. you have a right to believe in what you want but you like to share good things with people. I understand where you are coming from. Many do not know what love is and many will come in a sheep's covering but are wolves underneath and this is a great turn off for many. Projection is the word in a psychological sense to project your feelings on to some one else.
peace out

I'm guessing you're refering to the question about why do atheists turn to god if something bad happens? I read and replyed to that question. The guy assumed that most atheists do this even though I don't know anyone that has done. Most of ny friends and family are atheists and we've all been though hard times and we've never turned to god.

I think christians are so blinded by faith and brainwashed that they think that you can only survive with religion, the problem is they've never had a chance to think for themselves so they don't realise that you can live a perfectly happy and good existance and get through without even secretly once thinking about god.

Plus it makes them feel less guilty if they think the people they are preaching to are already interested in what they are saying. And I'm not saying that all christians preach to you or are like this because I have some christains friends who don't really mention their religion, only if I ask about it. But then I have known some people who just love to shove their christianity down your thoat.

I disagree my friend, I believe it boils down to faith!! Even if you believe in nothing you still have a faith in nothing!!! If you believe in God you have a faith in God!!! If you believe in evolution you have a faith in a bang!!! sorry if I'm being slightly narrow in my reply by not going into more detail, but mate, that is how i see it!! Jesus excepted all people, even if they didn't except him!! i don't believe atheists want to believe in God, as i believe true faith is birthed not learned, it's not a condition of the mind, rather a condition of the heart!! that is birthed by God and Him alone. Why does the very mention of the gospel irate and anger those who do not believe? it's not about arrogance my friend but rather the gospel is foolishness to the wisdom of the world!!! that is why so many atheists want to point to Christians as some sort of brainless, self seeking bunch that needs to follow a leader!!! a minority always spoils it for a majority, whether you believe or don't!! I believe that salvation is a gift from God that no man shall boast; the gift of God is the only thing that separates's between a learned faith, and a realised faith birthed and experienced that cannot be denied!! that why my friend i do not believe that Christians think atheists want to believe!! therefore i fully respect people for their belief's

Dude, you nailed them. There was a study done on the religion or not of prison inmates. The percent that claimed to be religious virtually matched the percentage in the real world. As for the Atheists, there were 1/10th or less in prison that the number in the real world. Real world means outside of prisons. I think that is very damning and further validates what you've stated. It is very nice to hear a fellow Atheist speak up and I'm appreciative that I caught this given the rate that questions fly by on this site. Sincerely, Laura.

Its not arrogant, but not all Christians are like this. I am a christian with a number of athiest friends and I believe they don't believe as this is what Atheist is and I am not gonna preach to em either. I love my friends for who they are and I'm not gonna change them in any way, If they dont believe, they dont,if they do, they do and that is that.
Belladona and Silvertongue. I have to be honest as it was me that posted the original question you speak of and realy apreciate your answers too as I have taken these on board. I asked for my own curiosity as it was a friend that had done a survey for a college project and found that three in ten in some way had turned to god. That is why I decided to post this question and pose the results of the answers toward a project I am doing about it on my creative writing course. Sorry if the question seemed offensive as it was not meant to be that way. Sorry!
Please dont assume that I secretly think you want to believe, cause as I mentioned above. I love people for who they are and not what they believe in.

Just because you can get through life's harder times without turning to God doesn't mean he ain't there.I never shove Christianity down any ones throat,I believe what I want,so do you,I don't understand what all the fuss is about, from Christians and atheists points of view, concentrate on your own lives.Should I just flush all my beliefs down the toilet because you say you don't need god?As soon as I say no I do need god I'm being persecuted for it,I can and will say what I believe ,IF ASKED.

It's a function of their own contentment in belief, that's all. They are really quite happy believing what they believe, and they believe that this is not dependent on their own needs, but is just what happens to everybody when they believe. So there's a degree of "they'd be happy too if they believed" thinking - which can sound arrogant, or merely simplistic. There's also a degree to which the "logic" of believing becomes so obvious to those who believe that they begin to feel that we "must" understand that it makes sense, we just don't choose to acknowledge it. This is what causes friction sometimes between believers and non-believerse - each group believes their position is the only truly "obvious" one.

To be truly Atheist you have to firmly believe that there is nothing supernatural of this earth, just nature. Its not arrogant for Christians to think that Atheists secretly believe that there is a God, as most Atheists think the same thing about Christians. As an Agnostic, I lean more towards the fact that there is not a God, but also acknowledge the possibility that He/She exists. We see things on a daily basis that question our faith. Earthquakes that kill hundreds of people, genocide in parts of Africa, war in Iraq, etc. Why does a merciful and compassionate God allow these things? Is God absent minded and forgotten us? In the end, no matter what faith you practice, we all want to believe that there is a better world out there for all of us. Whether God is involved in that theory or not depends on what faith you practice.

I'm christian and I don't think atheist secretly want to believe.

In the Italian section of Religion and Spirituality I could see that atheists and believers have one thing common: each side firmly assume to have got the Truth.
