Science can tell us how the universe was made and how it works, and philosophy can give us our ethics and our purpose in life. So what practical purpose does religion and spiritually serve? What can they offer us that science and philosophy can't?

It can give people hope. It can help people cope when faced with hardship, or death. And for some religions it can improve your health and quality of life. Look at Buddism, that's where Yoga comes from. And many religions contain a lot of wisdom.

I'm not trying to say that it's all sunshine and roses, but I'm sure the negative side will be well covered by your other responders :o)

Science can't actually tell us how the universe was made, gonna have to correct you on that part. Philosophy is a great source for morality and ethics, that is true.

I guess religion is the spiritualist part that some people like to follow to try and explain the unexplainable and touch the intangible. I like to follow my religious path, because it makes me more at peace with myself and those around me, that is all I follow it for.

Hello Gideonbernstein,

I am often asked this question. Religion does play an important part in all of our lives. When your life becomes enriched with God showering you with so many gifts you are able to afford more luxuries in your life. You then will hire a maid and cabana boy to clean your pool. Of course you are not going to pay out that much cash for such meaningless jobs and that is where religion comes into the picture. I can tell you that all followers in MY parish are taught to have no wants and needs other than a bible packed full of helpful hints on how to live their lives better than watching nothing but Martha Stewart re-runs all day long. So when you hire maids and cabana boys and even hey-suz (Jesus) to take care of your lawn you can rest easy knowing they work for peanuts and follow orders just like any other slave. Just put up a plastic jesus every 25 yards so they can kneel and whine every few hours.

Religion is for the people who are too stupid to understand science or philosophy, so they call it "witchcraft" and turn to a much easier thing to understand. That the universe was created by some higher power, and that higher power is going to make everything all good. It's like when a baby turns to its mother for reassurance, cause mommy will make it all better.

Religion controls people. Scares weak-minded people into voting according to their religious beliefs. Voting against stem-cell research, cloning and gay marriage only got them (and us) the worst president in American history, a trillion dollar war we will never pay for in my lifetime and loss of world stature and respect.
Religion causes people to fight wars and occasionally strap a bomb on and run into a crowded marketplace or subway. Or fly a plane into a building.
Religion hinders people from thinking rationally, logically and open-mindedly.
What GOOD is it? I guess it gives some people comfort in believing that there's someone watching over them. (Although, that notion is misguided because, God or not, we are on our own)

Religion allows you to take a cognitive break from reality. For instance, you can kill dogs for fun then tell people that you've found Jesus. Or you can grieve the death of a child by saying that "he works in mysterious ways".

Nothing of any use.

We're not quite sure how the universe was made but we know damn well that religion can't answer the question.

You are right it is good for nothing. Religion is the traditions of man and not of God.

DO THE WILL OF GOD
You need to find a home church, be obedient, follow his word, be baptized with the holy spirit, show your self approved and do the will of God (Mark 16: 15 - 18)

Religion has caused nothing but war and hatred among people. You would think the one-God concept would reunite humanity. But Noooo.. instead, religion is used to kill people in the name of God..
