For example, during WWII, there were some who hid Jews in their homes. If a German came by and asked if there were any Jews in their home, they would lie in order to save people's lives.

In another example, in the Bible, Rahab helped the spies of Joshua escape from Jericho by lying to the King's soldiers (and of course lowering them down in a basket, but besides the point) and in the end she was rewarded.

I thought maybe the answer might be somewhat obvious, but I heard from somewhere that a lie is a lie to God and I was just wondering what you all thought.

That is why it is all about your faith. God gave the 10 commandments to follow but he knew we could not keep all 10 and if you failed one, you failed all. IF you believe in Jesus then you are not under the 10 commandments and your sins are covered and remembered no more but you need to be obedient.

Why Jesus died For Us

He is our sacrificial lamb who shed his blood to cover your sins: past, present and future. If not he died at the cross in vain. He full filled (Luke 24: 44) and nailed the 10 commandments to the cross (Colossi ans 2:14). Christ did not die in vain (Galatians 2: 21). The spirit or the works of the law (Galatians 3: 2). Christ is the end of the law (Romans 10: 4). The law is our tutor no more (Galatians 3: 24 – 25). God will remember your sins no more (Hebrews 10:17). You are a sinner for life, there is nothing that you can do not to sin (1 john 1: 7 - 10). You can not go out into the world and do what ever you wish, just because Jesus covered your sins (Romans 6: 1 - 3). Hebrews 8: 7 – 13 (he wrote the laws into their hearts, so that you would know right from wrong.

If you have faith in Jesus and are obedient to God, then you are not under the 10 commandments.

If you do not believe in Jesus, then you are under the 10 commandments, now you need to bring your unblemished goat to the alter every year and sacrifice it to cover your sins but with Jesus, he is our new covenant.

You are justified by faith and not of your works

DO THE WILL OF GOD
You need to find a home church, be obedient, follow his word, be baptized with the holy spirit, show your self approved and do the will of God (Mark 16: 15 - 18)

hmmm..let's see. the first few centuries of Christians were embarrassed to be called ATHEISTS because they did not worship Caesar. so they hid their meetings and lied about what the meeting they held were really about to avoid death or slavery. suppose they said "oh! you got us we are Christians..take us away"
God arranged 2 jailbreaks in Acts 5 and 12. what if Peter told the angels that were sent "oh no, this is illegal and i must return to jail"
suppose that when Joseph and Mary were sneaking Jesus out of Bethlehem at night suddenly thought "oh no! This is illegal and King Herod will be displeased." so then he would been murdered along with the rest of the children.

I am extremely confident that lying to save an innocent persons life or protect safety is acceptable to GOD.

In the Old Testament they lived by the Law, but Jesus came so that we live by the Spirit, and if you have Jesus and obey Jesus commandment to love God first and your fellow man second, you'll be unable to commit sins without the conviction of the Holy Spirit. If you do sin, you have been forgiven. When Christ died for us, He died for ALL our sins, including past, present and future sins. When sometimes we tell a white lie, the Holy Spirit will keep bringing it up in your mind. You just need to acknowledge it by confessing it to God, to repent, which means don't do it anymore, then accept His forgiveness and go on. When Jesus died on the cross, He died for all the little white lies too.

If you are protecting someone's life and soul, that is commendable to God and to humanity. God will reward you.
If you lie to a soldier to save a person, think about it. you are doing a good deed. You are NOT lying to God, yourself, or anyone for that matter.

And no it is not a lie, and you don't have to go to confession for it.

If you tell the truth, the soldier will march this person to their death. Live with that?

They were protecting God's people. God knew thier heart. Rahab was Instructed to put a red string/garment In the window so that death would pass by her. She was doing the work of the Lord....

In Islam, lying is not acceptable. There are only two situations where lying is not only acceptable but, commendable. One; to lie to one's enemy to get some strategic advantage. Two: to lie in order to bring a husband and wife, who are having problems, together again. For example: to tell the wife that her husband says that he loves her and misses her when he didn't really say that. Also, in Islam, where there are only two evil choices to choose from then one should, of course, choose the lesser evil. If an innocent person's life was at stake- then it would be the lesser of the two evils to lie in order to protect that person.

It's very difficult to apply ethics using the Bible or any other religious scripture. Just read the following about ethics in the Bible:

"Lot refuses to give up his angels to the perverted mob, offering his two "virgin daughters" instead. He tells the bunch of angel rapers to "do unto them [his daughters] as is good in your eyes." This is the same man that is called "just" and "righteous" in 2 Peter 2:7-8. 19:8

Lot lied about his daughters being "virgins" in 19:8. But it was a "just and righteous" lie, intended to make them more attractive to the sex-crazed mob. 19:14"

Think about the individual situation, like in your first example, wasn't the lie saving lives pretty much? Enough said.

yeah it's a sin but it's all good . God's a pretty forgiving dude. You just have to be like, "sorry god" and he'll be like "it's cool. forget about it."
