I don't know what these people are talking about.
I am an American living in Korea.
1. I can guarantee you that there are less prostitutes in Korea than most nations in the world. (they exist everywhere, obviously) SoI am thinking Lynda's husband was in Thailand or China, or she is confused about Asia.
2. The food is actually quite good and grown the way food was meant to be. Koreans eat seasonally, for the most part. And avoid nearly all of the pesticides and growth hormones found in agriculture elsewhere.
3. Seoul is the most expensive city in the world if you are considering housing, utilities and wages. However, it is one of the cheapest if you consider food and clothing. I can eat mandu and kebob for a dollar or two and buy shoes for and jeans for $5 as well.
4. whoever said "very 3rd world" was either here 10 years ago or has never been here. Seoul is on the verge of 1st world nation status. "very 3rd world" would apply to India or Laos, etc. and the other statement about everyone trying to con you is also the furthest from the truth in Korea.
If you shop the outdoor markets, there is usually ONE price and if you don't want it, they generally let you walk away.
That person is confused... It is totaly different than China or Thailand where the prices start at 400% what they will eventually take.
I think the Korean people are some of the most hospitable and generous in the world.

Some of the guys answered the question mixed up Korea with other countries, or they have never been there.

Cost of living in Korea is not high at all. Except Korean Bar-B-Q, food is relative cheap. Streets are clean, people dress properly. Girls are sexy, but that doesn't mean they are prostitutes. There are no crazy drivers in the streets, all drivers and pedestrians follow traffic rules. I just can not find anything bad to say about Korea.

I bet Dave has never been to Korea yet and Lynda C is mixing up Korea with Thailand or Vietnam.

DawnV is pretty much right!
South Korea is a highly modernized country and its GDP per capita is as high as that of New Zealand or Spain.
Korea may not be as clean as Singapore or Japan, but it's definitely not a third-world country. (It used to be - 30 years ago =p)
3rd world countries would be Myanmar or Laos and etc.
Check this article out to make sure what the 3rd world countries mean:

Traffic can be horrible in Seoul, but so can New York and Tokyo. Plus, Seoul has a very good public trans system so you reall do not need to worry about traffic.

In terms of crime and safety, South Korea is one of the safest countries in the world. You can often see a woman walking down the street alone after midnight in Seoul which is dare to imagine in the big cities in the US.
Korea Fairly dangerous? duh~

Korea is a very exciting country with lots of energy and people are generally very friendly.

Went in '09. Very 3rd worls, North is just scarry! All over though is dirty, people trying to con you, don't speak anywhere close to English = but can READ it. Wouldn't go back for twice the money. Food SUCKS!!!!! unless you get taken to a special (expensive ) place by locals. Fairly dangerous.
