it doesnt hurt when they actually put them on but its sore hours later. what they do is you go in for an appointment first and they take pictures and x-rays and they make a mold of your teeth to see what you need on them. Then they put separators on your teeth which you need to leave on for a couple weeks. Then you make an appointment and you go back to get the braces a couple weeks later. What they do is they suck all the moisture out of your mouth and off of your teeth. then they put this plastic thing between your lips which opens your mouth more and keeps it open. Then they put these cotton things down in your mouth to absorb any moisture while the procedure is going on. Then they take the brackets and they start gluing them down to the front of your teeth. They take this light thing that makes the glue dry faster. Then they put these pieces on the back teeth that hold the wire in. After that they put wires through all of the brackets and cut the extra wire off. Then you pick out the colors you want and they put the bands on. After that they rinse your mouth off and dry it. Then you have to rinse your mouth out at the sink yourself which is gross. The orthodontist then comes out and checks everything to make sure its done right. Then every six weeks you have to come back to the office to make sure everything is still attached firmly and you get your wires and bands replaced. Your mouth is a little sore after that but it doesn't hurt. After a few months, they give you these elastics which are big rubber bands that you attach to the brackets on the top and bottom of your mouth on both sides that you have to wear all the time except for when you brush your teeth or eat.Another thing to remember is to brush your teeth and floss them and make sure you take proper care of them.

Let me just say...it didn't hurt at all when they put them on. Maybe a little pressure, and a mouth cramp here and there, but it didn't hurt.
I won't lie to you, the real pain comes about a day after. My mouth was so sore I couldn't chew Cheerios. I bit down on a Cocoa Puff and nearly cried!
The pain faded after a couple of days however, then I couldn't tell I had them on.
So have some Tylenol and soft foods on hand the first couple of days. ALSO VERY IMPORTANT-your doctor will give you brace wax. Keep this because it is used if your braces rub your mouth raw...and until you're used to it, it will in a couple of places.
I would do it all over again, and it was worth it!

once you get the braces, you may have cold sores due to the rubbing of the braces to your inner cheeks, lips or gums, but in my case those were not that painful, and they went away after a week or so.
for the first three days, you will have toothache and its not that painful too. its just like when you slept while you had your hand pressed against your teeth - that feeling that your teeth are so tender that you dont wanna bite down because you're afraid that they might fall off... but they pain is pretty tolerable.
after that, you will most likely be called to the dentist every month for adjustments and for the first 3 adjustments, you might be feeling a little bit painful a day after the adjustments...
but i assure you, once your teeth got used to the braces and the adjustments, having braces is like nothing

oh it's painful alright. When you first get them on you'll be hating life, and you won't be able to chew at all. You'll wonder if the pain will ever go away. But after a few weeks it will, and you'll one day realize-- hey! i can chew! What a glorious day that will be. And the pain will come back when you get them tightened, but it won't last as long. Tip to make it go faster: keep chewing. I know it hurts, but it really toughens you up and finally your mouth decides not to hurt.
So what they do to put braces on is they make an impression of your teeth, then they use that to make a mold for them to put the brackets on. it's a long process. then they hold your mouth open with these cheek-puller things (they're actually kind of comfortable). They have to put cotton and sucker tubes in to keep your teeth dry while they open up the pores in your teeth with a chemical that tastes nasty, so don't lick your teeth, and then they put glue on, place the brackets, and use a radiation thingey to bond them on. once all that is done they put in a wire and you're set.
Getting braces is an unpleasant experience, but trust me, it's worth it

Good for you! I wore braces on my teeth-for aobut three years, and well worth it. Braces help for dental hygiene. And proper dental care.
Getting them on, is putting silver bands on each tooth (one per tooth). Then a ligature wire is "strung" long the front of the bands, to help the teeth move slowly into proper place.
It is a little bit of pain with each adjustment afterwards-for a day or two. Not too bad. If you take aspirin, or tylenol, or some over the counter pain reliever, it will help. Also, eating soft foods after each adjustment helps too. Like peanut butter/jelly sandwiches, scrambled eggs, things like that.
You will need to brush your teeth after each meal/snack, etc. And, ask how to floss between the teeth with the ligature wire in place.
When you get them off, when the job is completed, your teeth will feel so smooth! Please be sure to wear your retainer as directed as well, to keep your teeth in proper place too. Afterwards. You will be so happy with the completed work!
Take care.

The very first time they put the braces on, it of course feels awkward. There are metals on each tooth and your lips can feel it, but later on you won't even feel much of it as you get used to it. Its not horribly painful, but when they tighten the wires every few months...its gives you a sore feeling on the gums because all the pressure, and you can't eat hard foods because it hurts. But its all worth it.
