You are correct. This parable is a story that Christ tells to help us understand a spiritual truth that is difficult for us to grasp. Alex T's answer is correct, as well. The father of the "party animal" does represent God as He is in the Trinity. (Father, Son, and Holy Spirit) He greatly rejoiced and willingly forgave his son for renouncing his sin and asking forgiveness.

Jesus gives us his response in a previous parable - the parable of the lost sheep.

Luke 15:7 - I tell you that in the same way there will be more rejoicing in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous persons who do not need to repent.

The prodigal son came back, and repented to his father. His father rejoiced and had a celebration for his son. In the same way, Jesus and all of heaven rejoices when one of us come back to Him.

Jesus is God, and so is the Father and Holy Spirit. So in this story the "father" represents the trinitarian God, which is all three.

Go with what the teacher says if you want a good grade. Jesus forgave the repentant sinner and welcomed him home.

Jesus is God. Read John 1:1-. Jesus is the word that became flesh in verse 14.

Jesus forgives. There is not big sin in our life that He cannot forgive if we ask forgiveness and repent.

Who was the sinner? The son who ran off to party? The father who could not understand his son and caused him to runaway? Or the stay at home son who resented the welcome party? Someone writes that Jesus told the story. I don't think he was in it.
