I wear glasses and have very blurry vision.. I'm short sighted.. without them... But just in the last week I have been seeing these strange bright flashes of white light about 2 times a day... Sometimes with my eyes open sometime shut.. I also see spots out of the corners of my eyes like there is a spider on the wall or something.. Mum reckons it could just be something to do with a nerve or something... What could it be?? Serious answers only thanks!!

Sorry, I answered your second question first.

The main possibilities for those symptoms are, in order of probability:
Posterior Vitreous detachment
Visual Migraine
Retinal detachment.

An assessment to differentiate between these is required,
A posterior vitreous detachment doesn't normally require any active treatment.
Visual migraines are not sight threatening (with one very rare exception, mentioned only for completeness)
But retinal detachments do require prompt attention and surgery, so finding out which is present is important.

Do you have new glasses that you're not used to? Do you have migraines afterwards. Many types of migraines are preceded by an "aura" that oftentimes come as a strange smell or strange sights.

If neither of the above is true, I would go see a doc right away and ask for a referral to a neurologist for testing, maybe an EMG or MRI to look for any abnormal brain function, especially in your visual cortex or anything pressing on your optic tracts (the nerves that conduct sight to your brain). Consistent twice a day flashes are a bit worrisome.

An ophthalmologist (not optometrist. Ophthalmologists have MD degrees, optometrists have OD degrees) may also know what's going on as this can also be some retinal diseases. Your primary care will know who is the best to refer you to.

Good luck!

It could be a detached retina--get to your eye dr ASAP! Since it's the weekend, maybe consider emergency room-but definetly DO NOT put off seeing your eye dr. on Monday.

Bright flashes can be a sign of a retinal detachment. Please go see someone ASAP. Optometrist is fine (despite what people say) they can still look at the back of your eye and refer if necessary.

They could be caused by lasers. Like someone beeming the lasers at some frequency that can cause you to see it even when your eyes are closed. The experiences I have are worse, the lasers actually show motion pictures of people doing it. You tend to wonder if they are hallucinations, but the whole purpose of it is to cause paranoia. Careful now. I have told my parents about it but they claim to be ignorant of such things. Maybe you are doing something wrong and/or your parents are playing some game, if I was you I would start kissing ass.

a question for your ophthalmologist...OR OPTOMETRIST (ahem, other answerer). if you already had multiple exams and you mentioned this to your docs & they investigated it & still gave you a "clean bill of health"...then the chances of this being serious are slim.
