well i dont know which breeds are available in India...but i have 3 pugs and i love them!they are cute in a uglyish way and stay pretty small.they are great friends and have the funniest personalities!most pugs can be more on the energetic side...so if you looking for a calm dog i would go with like a cocker spaniel or something.

Schnauzer! They are inside dogs, protective, loving, loyal and will definitely alert you if someone comes around. Only thing is you have to get them trimmed every two months or so. But worth it!

Maybe a miniature or toy poodle would be a good choice. They are small, loyal, clean (as long as you keep them clean) and are very smart. They can be trained pretty easily. They also don't shed because their fur is so curly. So you have to brush their fur, but at least it won't be all over your house. I am not sure if poodles are popular in India, but I know they are popular in many places, so it is possible.....

Well, shelties are very loyal, as are labradors... but labradors are a little big for your taste...

I would say get something medium sized, like a terrier...
but in order for you to train it well, and properly, you need to do so from a pup... so it will learn it and learn it early... because it is hard to train an older dog...

go to your local pound and get a mutt.

They suffer from less illnesses and can be just as loyal.
