How to pack light - travel to Paris and Italy?

I am going for holiday to Paris, then to Switzerland along the way to Italy in early October.
What clothes shld i bring to pack as light as possible?

Wear and pack one pair of jeans, T-shirt and sweater (so you have 2 of each), add a few T-shirts, underwear and socks.
A rainproof coat, wear proper shoes and carry a pair of slippers or flip-flops for bathroom and emergency use.
When you wear your last jeans, T-shirt and sweater you wash all.

Bring a bag that is just big enough for these clothes, the minimum in toiletries (Deo, toothbrush and paste and soap/shampoo in small bottles or bars,) and one good guidebook.
In that bag can be a thin second bag for lunch and to bring into town for the day.
