Great Danes! boy do I love those big babies.
yes, in fact, they are house dogs. try to keep a great dane outside and you will break its spirit. great danes need you and your company. they pine away like children when they are excluded from the house.
have you seen marmaduke. believe me the man who writes that knows what he is talking about. he has a great dane and he can tell you. they just want to be near you, on you, on your couch, on your bed. anywhere you are. that is where they think they belong.
yes. They make great house dogs. If you have a big house.
good luck. and i am smiling a lot because i love these dogs.

Alot of people often mistake Danes as being wonderful apartment dogs and I completely disagree unless you are getting an older Dane past the puppy stage. Danes do indeed need some room to run in a fenced in yard. Puppies are FULL of energy and are anything but lazy. A bored Dane can be a very destructive Dane. They also need room in a large yard to expel energy and it is essential for proper growth and to build strong bones and muscle to carry themselves into old age. I have never seen a Dane pup sleep 18 hours a day as was mentioned by another poster. Mine have plenty of wild moments in a days time. We have dog doors so they can let themselves out whenever they want and they enjoy being out several times a day to run, dig, lay in the sun, chew on sticks.. etc. But they ARE house dogs. They are very family oriented and do not like to be isolated from their people.
We have a very small house with 6 Danes but we also have large fenced in yard and a few acres where I can let them run 'supervised'.
Some places to get info on the breed are http://www.gdca.org
http://www.danesonline.com
and there is a fantastic book available to read online by Jill Swedlow called The Great Dane, Model Of Nobility. You will have to do a search for it. I don't have the link on hand. She is Sunstrike Danes though.. so you could search that way too. It's a fantastic site.
As with any breed, there are some things that effect Danes in health that you should be aware of before you bring one home and also, they require a good diet and many do not do well on cheap food bought at teh grocery or WalMart. You will have feed a pup the same as an adult and preferably a food with no more then 2 grains in the first 5 ingredients and no more then 22 to 23% protien.
Lots to learn before you run out and get a Dane.. Or any breed really. It's good to research as much as you can.

A lot of people mistakenly believe that Danes need a lot of room to run around, etc. However, they are actually excellent apartment dogs because they sleep about 18 hours a day. They do need exercise, like any dog, but they're not hyper. You can get a Great Dane from a Great Dane rescue (most of them are purebreds) or look on petfinder.com. But they are great dogs. They do drool, though!

be careful feeding them! they are the number 1 breed for GDV (an often fatal digestive condition where the dog's stomach and intestines twist) they need consistant small meals instead of one large meal a day. obviously great danes are big dogs and need a lot of space to move, but they do fine in a house. i'd suggest a big house over an apartment. check the akc for information on breed standards. that should be the first resource for any purebred dog owner!

They are excellent, wonderful dogs. They are very BIG dogs!
Go to akc.org for the breed profile ... dogbreedinfo.com is a great resource, too ... and talk to owners and (especially) breeders for more information ...
They do have a gentle disposition and can adapt to almost any living situation. If you are considering getting one, please do some research to make sure it's the right breed for you. Good Luck!

The only thing I don't like about them (or any giant breed) is their very short life span compared to other breeds (sizes, really).
